I’ve been having this conversation with a lot of patients lately — that our emotions and our bodies aren’t two separate things. In Chinese medicine, they never have been.
Each of the classical emotions is understood to affect the flow of qi in a particular way, and to touch a particular organ:
Anger rises → Liver
Overstimulation slows → Heart
Worry knots → Spleen
Sadness dissolves → Lungs
Fear descends → Kidneys
Shock scatters → Heart & Kidneys
The point isn’t that feeling things is a problem — emotions are meant to move through us. It’s the ones we hold in, quietly, for years, that tend to settle somewhere in the body and show up later as tension, poor sleep, tiredness or digestive trouble.
Acupuncture is one way of helping that held energy — and the feeling underneath it — begin to move again. Often people come in for a physical symptom and find something emotional loosens too.
Which of these resonates with you? 🌿
