Your nervous system doesn’t forget…. I had one of those moments recently that caught me completely off guard. I was talking to my daughter about university and whether she wanted to take a gap year… She doesn’t by the way … She wants to head straight off, and suddenly I realised I was reacting to the conversation in a way that felt much bigger than the conversation itself!!
I left home when I was 16, I didn’t have a choice. And as we were talking, I realised how much a part of me would have loved to have had what I’m able to give her. To feel wanted, supported and to know that someone had my back. There I was, years later, talking to my own daughter about exactly that, and something in me was hurting. It wasn’t that I hadn’t done the work. I have. I’ve spent years understanding myself and working through old patterns and abandonment. I genuinely thought I’d moved on from a lot of it, but that conversation made me realise that Sometimes we can understand intellectually and still have a physical or emotional response that surprises us, (And btw I know I was seeing this trigger with different eyes 👀 .. I could sense the pain, but it was a softer & more understanding feeling) & I’ve become much more aware of this through living in my own body too, particularly through periods of pain and when my health flares up.
Our bodies are communicating with us all the time. Are we actually listening? That’s one of the things I love about breathwork. Not because it fixes everything. It doesn’t. But because it gives us space to slow down, notice what’s happening and become curious instead of constantly overriding what we’re feeling. So perhaps the question isn’t always, “Why am I still affected by this?” Maybe sometimes it’s, “What is this part of me trying to tell me?” I’m still learning this myself, and perhaps that’s why this work means so much to me. 🤍
Has something ever happened that made you realise you’d been affected by something you’d thought you’d completely moved on from? Let me know below?
