🍓BERRIES!!!

Berry picking season is upon us and we enjoyed an amazing day out last week harvesting some strawberries and raspberries in the glorious sunshine!

❓Why are berries so good for us?

Both raspberries and strawberries are packed with vitamin C which is great for our immune system. Vitamin C helps our white blood cells to move around the body, acting as their fuel! Rasps and strawbs also have good amounts of a variety of B vitamins and minerals such as manganese, magnesium, potassium and copper.

Another exciting thing about berries is the bioflavonoid content: both rasps and strawbs contain anthocyanins which are natural compounds with biological activity! They have been associated with being anti-inflammatory, helping to prevent age-related conditions and even to have anti-viral properties.

The most exciting thing for me about these little beauties though is the fibre content. Both have great amounts of fibre which feeds the good bacteria in our gut, contributing to a healthy and thriving gastrointestinal system ❤️

The gorgeous sun we’ve been having has made this batch of berries super sweet - have you picked your own this year yet? It’s well worth the trip!

Much love,

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 vs 🇮🇹

While I’m fully supporting our glorious boys tonight 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 I just want to shout out to Italy for bringing delights to our everyday lives!

As we chowed down on our pre-match spaghetti I started to think of all the other amazing things that such a country 🇮🇹 has brought to us - food… art… music…. And my newest discovery (and personal favourite), Matteo Berrettini 🎾👀😻😂

Here’s to the best team winning!!! We’ll raise a glass regardless. But it’s coming home right??!

❓BREAKFAST OR BRUNCH???

While I love a good brekkie, I have to admit that I’m a coffee in the morning, lovely brunch at 10.30-11am kind of person for a special treat on the weekends!😎

Some people NEEEEEED their brekkie as soon as they wake up - and some people don’t feel hungry until lunch time… possibly even later. Everyone is different! So why do we have such differences in hunger levels?🤔

Hunger is a complex process governed by a few different hormones - the most talked about ones hormones that control our appetite are called ghrelin and leptin.

💃🏾Ghrelin increases our appetite - it is called the hunger hormone. And leptin let’s us know when we’re full and therefore decreases appetite. Working in balance, these should be working in a beautiful partnership like a ballroom waltz! Out of balance and we can start a battle in our body and our mind.

Things CAN get in the way of how our hunger hormones work - stress is one of them! And genetically, everyone’s hormones will work slightly differently. Some people might produce more ghrelin and some people might produce more leptin for example. We produce different levels at different times of the day too. See - told you it was complex.😵‍💫

So the big question is - can we influence them? Unfortunately, there’s no magic supplement that we can take (even though some will be marketed to suggest that there is…). Being aware of how our hunger hormones work is super important so that we can start to understand them, understand our hunger, understand how we feel and therefore be more in control of them through a number of different methods.

So back to the original question….. breakfast or brunch??!! This gorgeous fried egg with guacamole, feta, rocket and lashings of olive oil on a white sourdough for brunch does it for me every time! 🤤🤤🤤

Helloooooo team!!!

Here’s a photo dump for you of my glorious last few weeks 💖 I’ve been quiet - here’s why…

1️⃣ I’m busyyyyy! With the restrictions lifting, I’m finally really busy again doing lots of different stuff and projects. I’m learning, I’m teaching, I’m consulting and I’m creating - which is all a very happy place to be.

2️⃣ I’ve been valuing some quality time with friends and family - been out for meals (hurrahhhhh!!!!), discovered new places, enjoyed beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District and been topping up on vitamin D. ☀️

3️⃣ Sometimes it’s good to just slow down. And social media is often the first place I take myself away from when I’m finding life a bit overwhelming. Anyone else find it helps?

4️⃣ I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with social media - I love the community it brings together and the opportunity to connect but I do struggle with the pressures and some of the unkind behaviours that are becoming more and more common. Sometimes, I need a hiatus to gather my thoughts and learn to re-love the platforms. I also tell my clients to do the same so practice what you preach!!!!

Anyway, good to be back 😎

Much love,
SB x

🌈Can food make me happy?🌈

Think about food for just a minute. What does it mean to you?

❓Is it just fuel?
❓Is it comfort?
❓Is it joy?
❓Is it creativity?
❓Is it celebration?
❓Is it the everyday?

☀️No matter who you are, where you come from, what your culture is or what religion your follow, food likely means ALL of the above to us at different points in our days and lives.

🧬 NUTRITION is the science behind what food does in the body. It’s a complex series of biochemical processes. And while it’s important to consider these we mustn’t lose sight of what food MEANS to us - emotionally and socially. 💖

❤️Working with a nutritionist doesn’t take the fun out of food - it simply elevates it meaning that you can still enjoy everything about food only knowing that you’re nurturing your body at the same time. It can be a magical and enlightening experience.

🌈So YES - food CAN and DOES make us happy for many, many reasons. Ask yourself - is food making YOU happy? If you’re unsure of the answer, why don’t you book a FREE consultation with me and we can talk it through. Book directly via my website. 💖

🌈FAQ🌈

Set the scene: you’re in the pub (remember those?) and someone lovely who you’ve just been introduced to asks ‘so what do you do?’

Common things people say when you reply ‘I’m a nutritionist...’

1️⃣ ‘Oh cool! So are you vegan?’
No - I’m not a vegan! I love my meat and fish but much prefer when it’s sustainably sourced so try to buy as much as I can from my local farm shop or butchers. 🐮

2️⃣ ‘You must be so healthy!’
I would say generally I’m pretty healthy but I have good days and bad days just like everybody else. 😊

3️⃣ ‘So do you talk about poo? Gross!’
Yes! All the time! And it’s super important so make sure you check your poo!!!💩

4️⃣ ‘I bet you’re super fit!’
No not really! I’d like to be... I’m working on it... 😂

5️⃣ ‘Do you ever eat chocolate and ice cream?’
Yes!!! Not everyday - but nutritionists eat ice cream too!!! Pic of me today enjoying an ice cream at Bolton Abbey 🍦

6️⃣ ‘I bet your kid eats loads of vegetables?’
Absolutely not! My kid doesn’t even like vegetables 😂 much to my disappointment. I feed him a balanced diet and sometimes that comes in the form of fish fingers, beans and frozen peas - his fave. 🥦

7️⃣ ‘Are you gluten-free?’
Nope! No reason to be really unless of course you’re coeliac or have identified issues with the help of a professional.🍞

8️⃣ ‘Do you drink alcohol?’
Yes! I love a glass of wine or two... maybe three and even better with friends! Cheers 🥂

And my personal fave....
9️⃣ Do you feed your dog a raw diet?
Lol - no! 🐶

So see - us nutritionists (especially this one) are just normal people after all! 🥰

Much love,
SB x

Note - I acknowledge and respect every nutritionist’s decision to live however they choose! 💚💚💚

🌈WELCOME🌈

It seems fitting on to introduce you to my new venture - Food Body Mind. For those of you who don’t know, I’m Sarah, a Registered Nutritionist specialising in mental health & wellbeing. I’ve been a little quiet recently but very busy behind the scenes getting my ducks in a row!🐦🐦🐦

📚Following many years of study and a real personal interest in this area, I have decided to create a clinic focusing on mental wellbeing and I’m SO excited to finally share it with you!

🥦Research is really starting to show us that nutrition and lifestyle interventions may influence outcomes in common mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, and also may reduce the risk of developing these in the first place. Moreover, working with a nutrition professional on a one-to-one basis and in groups may also have positive outcomes.

✨✨So... enter Food Body Mind!!!✨✨

🙏🏽I’ll be opening a physical space in Ripon next year so think beautiful food in a gorgeous cafe, rejuvenating and relaxing yoga, and a clinic focusing on wellbeing including nutrition services, counselling, psychotherapy, acupuncture and possibly more!

📩Keep an eye on my website and sign up to my mailing list to be the first in the know! I’m offering a FREE 30-minute mini consultation for EVERYONE to get things kicked off so book directly through my site to take advantage of this limited offer!!! Link in bio.

🏔If you’re interested in joining my Food Body Mind closed Facebook group then please do so via my page! Button is right at the top. I’ll be running free challenges every month, organising hikes and yoga sessions and you’ll be joined by a supportive and active community who share your interests.

💖Thanks all for joining me on this venture and here’s to a focus on mental wellbeing for all!

🌈Rainbow chard🌈

This beautiful veg is so much fun - look at those colours! It’s a nutritional powerhouse with whopping levels of:
✅Vitamin A
✅Vitamin C
✅Vitamin E
✅Vitamin K
✅Potassium
✅Magnesium
✅Iron
✅Fibre

It’s a versatile veg - I like to chop (rainbow stalks and all) and pan fry it with loads of garlic... finishing with lashings of olive oil and lemon. A little sprinkle of feta cheese, roasted tomatoes and roasted pumpkin seeds would make a lovely salad with it too!

Vitamins A, E and K are fat soluble so make sure you have this with a good quality oil, such as olive or rapeseed, to make sure you can absorb these fabulous nutrients and make the most out of this superfood.

You might not find this in your supermarket - try your local farm shops or green grocers - mine is from 🌈❤️

Love,
SB x
