Mostly, I help women living with a chronic illness or chronic pain to take back control of their body and health. I teach them how to reduce their stress and anxiety to avoid flare ups and improve their mental and emotional wellbeing so they can live a happier life. I do this by teaching them a simple but powerful body-mind technique called sophrology. I also like to help busy professional women who can no longer function normally and fear going into burn-out to find back the sleep and energy they need to regain control of their lives. Reducing the overwhelm by teaching them simple techniques to calm down and switch off their minds to help them thrive

"I couldn't sleep last night, the pain was too intense, I couldn't find a position to sleep".

This is a common experience for people living with chronic pain.

A poor night can then leave the nervous system more sensitive and reduce the capacity to cope the following day. 🥱

And it can plunge you in a cycle.

The best approach to remedy this, is learn how to wind down, not just before going to bed, but all through the day.

Gentle breathing, releasing tension and reducing stimulation can all support you in doing this.

It doesn't have to take much time, effort or energy.

Start with something small enough to repeat. Two minutes here, five minutes there.

Regular short practices through the day can be more useful than an elaborate long routine once a day at night. 💚✨

Pacing begins with noticing.

Before a flare or crash, the body often gives small signals. You may notice a nagging sensation, some heaviness, a change in breathing, difficulty concentrating, irritability or increased tension.

It is easy to ignore these signs when there is still more to do. Yet responding earlier can be more helpful than waiting until your energy has completely gone.

A short pause gives you information. Ask yourself what you are noticing, what can wait and what would support you now.

Pacing is not giving up.

It can feel frustrating at first, but it's about finding your baseline and then build upon it.

It is using your available energy with greater awareness so that you overall have more to do what matters to you. ✨

Many people living with pain or fatigue tell me that they feel guilty when they rest. 💚

Rest can feel like something that must be earned, or evidence that you have not done enough. In reality, responding to your body's limits is a practical form of energy management.

Waiting until you are completely depleted often makes recovery harder. Planned pauses can help you notice changes earlier and respond before your system becomes overwhelmed.

Rest does not have to mean doing nothing for the whole day. It can be a few quiet minutes, a change of position, slower breathing or stepping away from stimulation.

What type of rest helps you most?😌

A more conscious person contributes to a more humane society.

The practice was born from the study of human consciousness. And that gives us another way of thinking about values.

A value that exists only as an idea remains distant. A value that is felt, recognised and consciously chosen can become a source of direction and strength.

Through the body, breath and focused awareness, the Sophrology practice helps us reconnect with what gives our lives meaning and strengthen the positive within our experience.

But this work does not stop with the individual.

The values we live influence how we treat other people, how we work, how we lead and how we contribute to our communities. Greater awareness can bring greater clarity, respect and responsibility to these everyday interactions.

How we live our values shapes not only our own lives, but the world around us.
This is why the International Sophrology Federation is joining the global World Values Day Valuesthon on 15 October.

Under the banner Giving Forward with Sophrology, ISF members from around the world are volunteering their time to offer free online Sophrology sessions from 8am to 10pm BST.

It's hard to make decisions when you live with chronic pain.

Is this too much? Will I end up in bed tomorrow?

Will I have enough energy to get home?

Should I go or cancel again?

Uncertainty and indecision can leave you feeling drained.

Over time, fear of a flare can lead to avoiding more activities, feeling less confident and becoming increasingly isolated.

The answer is not to push through at any cost. It is to build your baseline and work from there.

How to recognise your limits and manage pain is key.

If you develop these skills (because there are skills), you can feel again more in control of your life and more confident on how to navigate difficult days without necessarily crashing.

One step at a time.

Have you noticed that pain can feel more intense during periods of stress?

Pain is shaped by more than physical sensation alone. Stress, fear, poor sleep and uncertainty can all keep the body in a state of high alert. When the nervous system is under pressure, tensions increase and the experience of pain feels stronger.

This does not mean the pain is psychological or not real. It shows how closely the body and mind work together.

Learning ways to settle the nervous system is part of a wider pain management approach.

Pain is always real.

It's a message sent by the brain to protect you.

But when pain becomes chronic, sometimes this protection mechanism gets dis-regulated and overactive.

The bad news is that it is constantly there, exhausting you.

The good news is that by learning to calm the nervous system and gently reconnect with the body, you can manage pain very effectively.

I once worked with someone who, during a session, experienced something completely different in an area of their body that was “always” in pain. It felt calm and pain was no longer present.

Here we had opened a field of possibilities, and an ability they could keep working on.
