Winnie-the-Pooh turns 100 this week, and I wasn’t prepared for how much that would affect me.
My eyes filled up. My throat tightened. My hand went straight to my chest. It was a very physical reminder of a childhood I’ve lost touch with at times.
The Hundred Acre Wood was one of the most comforting places of my childhood. My favourite story is Pooh’s Grand Adventure, which is a much darker tale than it looks. It’s about loss, separation, growing up, and rupture and repair, with Christopher Robin’s return at the end.
It also gave us this line: “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. Even when we are apart, we will always be together.”
I wish I’d understood those words as a child.
Looking back, I think each character holds a part of me:
🍯 Pooh: loving and a little naive
🐷 Piglet: forever friend and braver than he knows
🫏 Eeyore: sad but loyal
🦉 Owl: storyteller and scatterbrained
🐯 Tigger: bouncy, full of fun and optimism.
Perhaps that’s why these stories last. We don’t just love the characters; we recognise ourselves in them.
Happy birthday, old friend. 💛

We used to believe that schools built brains. Now we know that it is PLAY that builds the brains that schools can then use. Dr Gordon Neufield.

And FREE play and not scheduled play is the best kind of play to nurture creativity, problem solving, socialising and adaptability.
