Historically, in 1912, scoville units were measured by the number of times a chilli extract had to be diluted in sugar water before a panel of tasters could no longer taste it.
Within the South Devon Chilli Company range we sell, one of the least popular is the Scorpion Chilli sauce, made with Trinidad Scorpion Chilli’s, measured at over 1.4million scoville heat units (devastatingly hot).
That’s part of the reason for its lack of popularity, however if you do try it, a little goes a very very long way, so it’s actually quite an efficient purchase for heat level. Or you might just like things very hot!
If you enjoy chilli sauce with a little more … predictability, one of the most popular is the Thai sweet chilli sauce, it goes well with many dishes including rice based ones. There are options for all levels of chilli tolerances. And many of these make fantastic gifts!
