October is both ADHD Awareness Month and Menopause Awareness Month.

Two conversations that deserve to be happening together.

Is it your ADHD, or is it perimenopause? Or could it be both?

You’ve spent years understanding your ADHD. Then suddenly, the brain fog, forgetfulness and emotional overwhelm feel harder to manage.

Oestrogen influences neurotransmitters involved in attention, motivation and emotional regulation. As levels fluctuate during perimenopause, ADHD symptoms may become more noticeable.

Research involving 5,392 women found severe perimenopausal symptoms in 54.2% of women with ADHD, compared with 30.1% without ADHD.

You haven’t forgotten how to cope. Your biology may be changing.

You lost your period. Your thyroid hormones changed. But which came first?

Your menstrual cycle and thyroid function are more closely connected than you might realise.

Thyroid hormones influence ovulation, reproductive hormone signalling and menstrual regularity. But changes in energy availability, stress and wider hormonal health can also affect both thyroid markers and your cycle.

So, when your bleed disappears and your thyroid results change, it’s worth asking whether one is contributing to the other, or whether something else is influencing both.

Because two changes happening together doesn’t always mean one caused the other.

Understanding the why matters just as much as identifying what’s changed.

Your cholesterol is normal. But does that tell you everything about your cardiovascular health? 🫀

Not necessarily.

Two people can have almost identical LDL cholesterol results, yet very different numbers of cholesterol-carrying particles circulating in their blood.

This is where Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) becomes useful.

While LDL cholesterol measures how much cholesterol is being carried, ApoB helps us understand the number of potentially artery-damaging particles.

And that distinction matters, particularly in people with insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides or other metabolic risk factors.

Cardiovascular risk isn’t determined by one number, and prevention shouldn’t start only when symptoms appear.

ADHD is something I talk about openly because it’s something I live with myself.

And for ADHD Awareness Month, I wanted to talk about an area of research of the relationship between ADHD and the gut microbiome.

We’re learning more about ADHD all the time, and research is increasingly looking beyond the brain alone, including the gut–brain axis, microbial composition, inflammation and neurotransmitter pathways.

It doesn’t mean the gut causes ADHD, and it certainly doesn’t mean you can “fix” ADHD by fixing your gut.

But as someone with ADHD, I think it’s fascinating to see how our understanding of it continues to evolve.

There is still so much we don’t know.

And for me, ADHD Awareness Month should be about having these conversations too, moving beyond the stereotypes and understanding just how complex ADHD actually is.

Low testosterone doesn’t automatically mean TRT.

A low result is a reason to investigate; not necessarily always a definite reason to start treatment.

Testosterone can be influenced by sleep, nutrition, calorie intake, body composition, alcohol, medications, illness and wider metabolic health. And testosterone itself is only one part of the hormonal picture.

Symptoms matter too. But fatigue, low libido, reduced performance, poor concentration and low mood aren’t exclusive to testosterone deficiency.

TRT can absolutely be the right treatment for some men.

The important part is establishing whether there is a genuine deficiency, why it may be happening, and whether treatment is clinically appropriate.

A new way to investigate suspected endometriosis.

Ziwig Endotest® is now available at My Atlas.

Using a simple saliva sample, the test analyses specific microRNAs associated with endometriosis to provide a positive or negative laboratory result.

No blood draw.

At home or at Atlas HQ.

No specific point in your cycle required.

Can be completed while using hormonal contraceptives or treatment.

It doesn’t replace imaging or specialist assessment, but can offer another route for women experiencing symptoms associated with endometriosis.

Now live at My Atlas.

High creatinine doesn’t always mean there’s something wrong with your kidneys.

Creatinine is commonly used to assess kidney function and calculate your eGFR - but it can be influenced by more than your kidneys, including:

* Muscle mass
* Recent exercise
* Creatine supplements
* Protein/meat intake
* Changes in body composition

So, if you train regularly, carry more muscle or take creatine, a higher creatinine and lower eGFR may need more context.

This is where Cystatin C can be useful. It’s another marker of kidney filtration that’s much less influenced by muscle mass.

It doesn’t replace creatinine; but looking at creatinine, eGFR, Cystatin C, urine markers and previous results together can help build a clearer picture.

Women with PMOS are often told to wait until they want to conceive before asking questions about their hormones, cycles or ovarian health.

But your o***y health matters long before fertility becomes the conversation.

They’re involved in hormone production and sit within a much wider system connected to metabolic health, bone health, cardiovascular health and brain function.

So when periods become irregular, ovulation changes or symptoms of PMOS begin appearing, the conversation shouldn’t simply be:

“Come back when you want a baby.”

Your menstrual cycle can be an important health signal, not just an indication of whether you can conceive.

There is no single PMOS “look”.

Irregular periods are only one part of the picture.

PMOS can present differently between women - from changes in ovulation and androgen-related symptoms to insulin resistance, glucose regulation and wider metabolic health.

And it matters beyond fertility.

Same diagnosis. Different presentation. Different biology.

The question shouldn’t be “Do you look like you have PMOS?”

It should be: what is happening in your individual picture?

Low iron doesn’t only affect your energy - it can affect your thyroid too.

Iron is required for thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an enzyme involved in the production of thyroid hormones.

The relationship can work both ways.

Reduced thyroid function may also affect gastrointestinal function and iron absorption, while conditions associated with autoimmune thyroid disease can further complicate the picture.

That overlap matters because the symptoms can look very similar:

* Fatigue
* Hair shedding
* Feeling cold
* Brain fog
* Poor concentration
* Reduced exercise tolerance and recovery

The body doesn’t work in isolated systems; neither should your testing.
