Jon is an internationally recognised mouth painting artist whose images are renowned in the Christmas card market.

Jon lives alone with the support of two carers 24/7. His arms and legs are permanently paralysed due to a spinal cord injury in his neck, following a motorbike accident at the age of 17.

His latest Permobil M3 Corpus powerchair enables him to continue accessing a purpose-built studio where he tends to paint five to six days a week. In between, the five-mile range on his powerchair allows him to access countryside walks, attend events and concerts.

Which is the best power add-on for me? It's a question we're often asked at Recare.

The answer depends on you, your wheelchair, where you use it and what you want to achieve. That's why we recommend a free assessment with our team.

But first, let's explain a little more about power add-ons and the different options available.

A power add-on is a powered device that attaches to a manual wheelchair, providing additional assistance when the user needs it. It can reduce the physical effort needed to propel the wheelchair, while still allowing the chair to be used manually when powered assistance isn't required.

Depending on the individual's needs, a power add-on can help with:

• Reducing fatigue
• Reducing strain on the upper body
• Travelling further with less effort
• Using the wheelchair more frequently
• Greater flexibility across different environments and situations

What are the different types?

These battery-powered products can be categorised by how and where they attach to a wheelchair: at the front, in the middle, at the back, or controlled by an attendant at the rear.

There is also a wide variety of battery sizes to choose from, depending on the distance and level of power required. In certain products you can achieve up to 60 miles on a single charge with heavy duty batteries.
