You could be skipping the most important part of learning a handstand. 🤸🏼‍♂️

One of the most overlooked mistakes for finally getting upside down is hiding in plain sight.

A handstand requires more than muscle. It takes wiring. Your nervous system has to learn to coordinate very specific muscles, so you have both the horsepower and control the moment your feet leave the ground.

These four drills are essential to practice before attempting a handstand. You can find them on page 191 of my book, “Yoga Optimized.”

💪🏼 1️⃣ Superman Plank
💪🏼 2️⃣ Hollow Body
💪🏼 3️⃣ Pike Push-Ups
💪🏼 4️⃣ Supported Pike Handstand

Master these foundations, and you’ll build the strength, control, and body awareness that set you up for handstand success. Skip them, and you may find yourself kicking up, falling, and wondering why you’re not progressing or getting injured.

Here’s the fun part: You don’t have to wait until you can balance to feel stronger. Practice these three times a week for the next month and notice how much more solid and connected you feel with every session.

Walk before you run. Before you go upside down, build the strength and control to stay there.

👇🏼 Comment HANDSTAND, and I’ll send you the free video tutorial and full breakdown of all four drills from “Yoga Optimized” so you can start today.

Ever feel the pressure to prove your worth? 🌿

I felt it minutes before teaching hundreds of students at Wanderlust O’ahu. Shiva Rea and Baron Baptiste were teaching next door. The musician Michael Franti | ON TOUR was on a mat in my class.

Famous teachers have a room excited before they say a word. I had no star power to lean on. I could almost hear hundreds of students thinking: “Who is this guy?”

It was 2013. I was well known in Canada, but I’d only had my U.S. work visa since 2011.

The trade winds were howling, sending mats flying across the grass, and my mind was blowing just as hard.

The Bhagavad Gita begins with that similar feeling. Arjuna, the greatest warrior of his age, stands at the edge of a battlefield and freezes. His bow slides from his hand.

Two minutes before class, I closed my eyes and breathed. And I saw that the real danger was not the wind or the crowd. It was comparison.

Krishna’s answer is one of the most freeing lines I know: “Better to do your own dharma imperfectly than to do another’s perfectly.”

I didn’t need to teach their style of class. I only needed to teach what I loved, in my own way. So I breathed in a mantra of my own, one I still use today: “✨Nothing to prove, everything to share✨.”

When people tell me they loved the class, I say that accepting the praise would be like a radio taking credit for the music. I didn’t write the song. I only broadcast it.

This is the heart of Karma Yoga: you have a right to your actions, never to their fruits. The way I say it is, “Nothing personal, just God’s business.”

What would you offer the world if you had nothing to prove and everything to share. Tell me below.👇🏼

March 2020. My income crumbled. My family was stranded in Bali. Sickness entered our home. The news terrified me. ☀️

The Yoga Sutras teach that one of the keys to a still mind is changing our relationship with fear and desire. I had taught this for decades. But that spring, I learned what the novelist John Galsworthy meant when he wrote that idealism increases in direct proportion to our distance from the problem.

Suddenly, the teachings I had spent my life sharing weren’t just philosophy. They were something I desperately needed to live.

At 3:30 in the morning, I lay awake imagining everything that could go wrong. My mind kept building snakes out of rope.

When fear took over, I found myself trying to push it away. The harder I pushed, the tighter it held.

Before dawn, I walked to the empty beach, sat down to meditate, and watched the sun come up. The beauty of it stirred something in me, and I realized that the sun does not chase the darkness away. It simply rises, and the night fades on its own.

Sitting there, I felt the same thing happen inside me. The more I relaxed into the light within, the less room fear had. I did not have to fight it. It loosened its grip by itself.

Patanjali taught that the mind grows steady by turning toward the luminous light within. I found my way to it through the outer one.

You don’t have to win a war with your fears and desires. You only have to remember the sun.

What is your sun? When your mind starts building snakes out of rope, what brings you back? Tell me below.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I think we’ve got it backwards. We get old because we stop learning them.

This is my current attempt at a 90-degree handstand pushup. Not fully parallel yet, but I’m knocking on the door. I’m not sharing it to brag. I’m sharing it because there’s no age limit on learning something new. I only started practicing this skill in 2024, at age 55.

And it’s not just muscle. 🧠 Neurons that fire together wire together, and the ones you don’t use, you lose. Every hard new skill wires in fresh pathways. Challenge changes you, right down to your brain.

So go learn a new trick. 👊🏼✨A language, a dance step, a new pose, a pull-up. Whatever you’ve told yourself you can’t do. Most of the time, that’s just a story, and stories can be rewritten.

Tag someone who needs the reminder that it’s never too late to learn a new trick. ✌🏻

I couldn’t do 98% of this when I was 54. I didn’t even know most of these skills existed.

I move every day out of gratitude for this one wild life, and for the body that carries me through it. We can let it slowly atrophy, or we can wake it up with joy. I choose joy.

Three years ago I added calisthenics to my yoga, and I never looked back. Here’s the difference I feel. Strength training gives you horsepower. Skill gives you control. Lifting on machines is like buying a faster car. Training with your own body weight is like becoming a better driver.

And if these skills look intimidating, breathe. Wherever you are, we meet you there. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you, but we will never overchallenge you either, because that only demoralizes. We find the edge that’s exactly right for you.

I’m adding yoga and calisthenics routines to Blissology On Demand now, and I can’t wait to share the Loose Fit and Happy format with you in Bali next March.

The skills are only part of the point. The rest is growing stronger together, with joy and laughter, and making friends for life. Come change your body and your mind with us.

Which skill would you love to learn? Tell me below, and tag someone you’d train with.

Do you feel a call in your heart to bring your gifts into the world?

Here’s what I keep relearning. We don’t think our way into our purpose. We practice our way into it, together, in a room full of people brave enough to go deep.

These are some highlights from our Blissology training. I’m watching people study the body, explore the edges of health, and do it with real focus and a lot of joy.

If you’ve ever felt that pull to share what moves you, this is your reminder that you’re not meant to do it alone.

What would you teach the world if you had the courage? Tell me below.

Our next training is in Bali, May 14 to 30, 2027. Space is limited, and the link is in my bio.

After 28 years of teaching yoga, I keep relearning the same lesson. The power of what we share is directly proportional to how broken we are.

Yesterday, when I showed up to teach, I had no game plan. No sequence, no theme, no dialogue I wanted to land. I knew only one thing: Rendy had told me I’d become more serious and less playful.

It surprised me. Sometimes we change so slowly we don’t feel it happening. I’ve been facing challenges in almost every part of my life, and little by little, those circumstances have changed me. I didn’t notice, because for most of my life I’ve identified as the same joyous kid I always was. But life has poured some hard things on me.

Here’s the blessing: I get to share the thoughts and feelings I’m still working through, right inside my own practice. I’m not just teaching triangle poses and handstands. I’m working through emotions. I’ve said it many times: I started Blissology because I needed this medicine myself, not because I’m perfect or enlightened.

So in class, we laughed. We sang. I call it kara-yogi. We held hands. And we cried. Every one of us.

And this isn’t only about teaching yoga. Whatever creative expression you bring into the world, remember this: the power of what we share is directly proportional to how broken we feel.

We just marked World Mental Health Day. Please never be ashamed when life knocks you down. You can rise. I’ve watched it happen again and again. But don’t do it alone. Find support, and find a practice that moves you.
