𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗵 𝗞𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝟮.𝟬 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁.

We have placed an interactive 3D model online, allowing anyone to explore the future community socio-medical centre in Kawangu, East Sumba and understand how the different parts of the site are intended to work together.

This is more than an architectural exercise. The organisation of space matters in a medical and logistical base. Patient care, a pharmacy and basic laboratory, training, storage, workshops, vehicles and team operations all need clear, practical connections. Good circulation also helps separate clinical activities from logistics and makes daily work safer and more efficient.

The model gives a concrete view of a project being built step by step on our 4,200 m² site. Some elements will continue to evolve as technical studies and construction priorities are refined, but the purpose remains unchanged: a functional base supporting healthcare, public-health work, training and field missions in remote communities.

These images show the first construction phase we want to begin this year. It will bring together the most immediately useful spaces for field operations: a small medical centre, pharmacy, basic laboratory, workshop and storage area, as well as a temporary office while the rest of the site is developed.

This first block is designed around practical needs. Medicines must be stored safely. Basic diagnostic work needs a clean, dedicated space. Medical teams need somewhere to assess and treat patients before or after field missions. Equipment, water-system materials and logistics supplies also need secure storage and a functioning workshop.

The architecture is only the visible part. What matters is building a base that can support care, training, public-health work and remote-village logistics every day.

The project is being developed together by Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia in Kawangu, East Sumba. These new views help make the next step more concrete before construction begins.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗵𝗮 𝗢𝗿𝗶 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝘂, 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮, 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹. There is no nearby clinic. But there is a trained community health agent, essential medicines, practical advice and a direct link to our medical team when referral is needed.

This is Primary Medical Care in reality: care reaching a person where she is.

Across East Sumba, the Kawan Sehat community health agents provide first-contact care to more than 1,000 patients each month. They recognise warning signs, provide appropriate treatment within their training, explain how to use medicines safely, support prevention, and contact our medical team when a patient needs further assessment or referral.

These visits do not replace a hospital. They reduce the dangerous distance between a patient and care. For families living far from health facilities, that distance can determine whether a treatable illness is managed early or becomes an emergency.

Rambu Esther's visit represents something simple and essential: trained care, close to home, connected to a medical team, when time matters.

The Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia teams arrive with doctors, nurses, equipment and medicines.

Patients have vital signs checked, speak with a doctor and receive tests when needed. We dispense medicines ourselves. In addition to consultations, our educators work with adults and children using our health posters.

Yet we keep meeting the same problems. We want to connect the consultation with what a person can do at home.

My daughter Flavie, an emergency nurse at the CHUV in Lausanne, asked why we could not prescribe something besides medicines. We are now preparing that idea with our teams. One or two actions, chosen with the patient, demonstrated in practice and followed up locally if needed.

Reducing salt intake may be useful. Any food recommendation must begin with what is available and affordable. Extra walking makes little sense for someone already walking all day. We need to listen first.

This is a proposal to test, with no results claimed yet. Treatment remains essential.

Our Kawan Sehat health agents are preparing with the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia teams, alongside doctors, nurses, supervisors and educators. The planned care days will bring consultations, treatment and medicines closer to people. They will also make space for practical conversations about health and prevention.

A prescription matters. So does explaining how to wash hands, prepare a healthier meal, or include a green vegetable when one is available. These messages are most useful when they are clear, realistic and shared with respect for each community.

The five days are expected to reach several hundred patients.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟯 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿. Further information will follow.

𝗜𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗽𝘂. In this photograph, mothers wait under a tree while health workers from Puskesmas Kambaniru weigh and measure children.

Our team saw names mixed up. We saw children approached for vaccination without proper checks of identity, age and previous doses. Others risked being missed. Vaccines and medicines were not sufficient for everyone who came. These are serious failures in a service families depend on.

A measurement without an age and a record cannot tell a mother how her child is growing. A vaccination decision requires the right child and the right history. If a dose is unavailable, someone must record it and tell the family where and when to return.

In remote villages, mothers may walk kilometres for the same chance. Many have no other realistic way to obtain care. We cannot tell them to come back without a plan.

I cannot know what individual staff members felt. I can say that care must be safe, personal and explained. Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia organise community medical days and work with Kawan Sehat agents. We must hold ourselves to this standard too.

At a Posyandu in Lambanapu, our team saw confused records and scarce supplies. Families need care that follows each child.

𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸, 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮, 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲. 𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱, 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵.

We were travelling to evaluate the solar installation we put in place at the school 11 months ago. Electricity there is practical: light for classrooms, power for teaching, and a system that must keep working after the day it is installed. Going back to check it matters as much as the installation itself.

We do not know when the crosses were raised. Perhaps they remain from Easter celebrations, but that is only our thought. I stood there for a moment and prayed. I prayed for the future of Fair Future Foundation for the Rumah Kambera Community Socio-Medical Centre to find the support still needed, and for our teams to continue reaching more people.

After years of travelling these roads with our colleagues at Kawan Baik Indonesia, I know how much work still lies beyond the next hill. That afternoon, the crosses gave me a place to stop and say it plainly.

Two buffalo were grazing nearby. Behind the trees were homes in a village with no grid electricity.

The panel is connected to an old scooter battery outside the photograph. In the house, that battery gives enough power for one 12-volt lamp. It is a small, practical answer made by people who need light when the day ends. It shows the distance between one lamp and reliable electricity.

Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia are working to bring solar power to remote villages and schools in East Sumba. With the right design, reliable power can support homes, schools and health work. This little panel should not be asked to do all that.

At SDN Mbajik, our teams have installed and evaluated a larger school system. In Mahu, the first step is to understand how people already live with the absence of power, what they have built themselves and what they need the electricity to do.

Our foundation has worked in Indonesia since 2008. I keep returning to this chair by the road. It holds a panel small enough to lift in two hands and a question much larger than the photograph.

This morning at Rumah Kambera, two teammates held up a billboard about the waste we leave behind.

𝗠𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲, 𝗺𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia have prepared ten panels for public places in Waingapu. This photograph was taken before installation. It shows how rubbish reaches air, water and soil.

More packaged goods reach communities, but collection and safe disposal do not always keep pace. Burning waste pollutes the air. Rain carries packaging into drains and waterways. We cannot ask households to sort waste and then give them nowhere for it to go.

Our Kawan Sehat agents also bring this conversation into schools. Children learn to sort; adults and services must make it possible. Reduce disposable packaging where practical, keep organic scraps apart, and do not burn plastic.

You may have heard that everyone eats a credit card of plastic each week. That is not a measured fact for people here. The waste our teams see in the field is enough reason to act without inventing a dose.

We have worked here since 2008. These ten signs begin a public conversation that requires collection, transport and care for the places we share.

This morning at Rumah Kambera, two members of our team held up a new billboard before it left for Waingapu. Its message is simple in Indonesian.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗜𝗩.

Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia have printed ten of these panels for public places in the city. We have used posters and village conversations for HIV prevention, but we also need to meet people in the streets they cross every day.

We are seeing a serious rise in reported HIV cases in East Sumba. What matters now is that people know a test is available and that a result can lead to care. HIV can be present without obvious symptoms. A reactive screening test needs confirmation; a negative test after a recent exposure may need repeating.

Testing must be confidential. People need treatment and respect, not gossip. Effective antiretroviral treatment protects health and, with sustained viral suppression, prevents sexual transmission.

We have worked alongside local health teams since 2008. A billboard cannot diagnose or treat anyone. If it helps one person ask a Puskesmas about a confidential test, it has started a conversation that our services must be ready to continue.
