๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐ is a good time to talk about awareness itself.
Today, noticing hair loss is often only the beginning.
Many people start by searching online. They turn to Google, scroll through social media, use AI, compare information and try to understand what might be happening. For many patients, this is already part of the hair-loss journey.
A study published last year showed that among 390 patients with androgenetic alopecia, 69.3% used online and social media platforms to look for information about hair loss treatments. Google, Instagram and TikTok were the most commonly used sources [1].
And what about AI?
A 2025 study compared ChatGPT 4.0, Gemini 1.5 Flash and DeepSeek R1 in answering common questions about androgenetic alopecia. ChatGPT 4.0 and Gemini 1.5 Flash generally provided accurate, readable and user-friendly answers. The authors suggested that these tools may be useful for patient education, especially when used together with medical guidance [2].
But getting useful information online is one thing. Making a diagnosis is another.
A 2026 review on AI in hair disorders points out that we still do not have AI tools that can reliably diagnose different types of alopecia in real clinical practice. AI can help explain terms, organize information or help patients prepare questions for their doctor. But it does not replace clinical assessment [3].
And this can be especially important in hair loss, because different conditions may look quite similar.
In the comparative study mentioned earlier [2], ChatGPT 4.0 and Gemini 1.5 Flash gave generally satisfactory answers, but both missed fibrosing alopecia in pattern distribution (FAPD), a scarring alopecia that can follow a pattern similar to androgenetic alopecia. DeepSeek R1 went further and incorrectly stated that scarring alopecia does not follow an androgenetic alopecia-like pattern. According to the author, information like this could delay a dermatology consultation, an important issue in scarring alopecia, where delayed treatment may result in permanent damage to more hair follicles.
So awareness is not only about noticing hair loss.
It is also about knowing where to search for information, which sources to trust, and when it is time to see a doctor.
