Melukat is a purification ceremony in Balinese Hindu tradition that aims to cleanse the mind, body, and soul of negative energy or bad influences.
Literally, the word "melukat" comes from the Old Javanese word "lukat," which means to release or purify. This ritual is usually performed in places with holy water sources (tirta), such as springs at temples, rivers, or sacred waterfalls.
During the procession, a person will typically:
* Wear traditional clothing (sarong and shawl).
* Bring offerings (such as canang sari) as a form of respect.
* Offer prayers led by a priest.
* Wash oneself or soak in a holy water fountain.
This ritual is often performed on days considered auspicious in the Balinese calendar, such as the full moon or the moonrise, but can also be performed at any time when a person feels the need for spiritual cleansing. One of the most famous locations for this procession is Tirta Empul Temple, as well as other sacred sites such as Mengening Temple.
