Perimenopause is usually talked about as something that happens in your 50s. For a lot of women it starts earlier, sometimes in the late 30s.

It's the stretch before periods stop, and it can last several years. The average age of menopause in Ireland is 51, so for some women the changes begin more than ten years before.

It doesn't always look like hot flushes. Periods changing, sleeping worse, low mood or more anxiety, aching joints, brain fog. Any of these can have other causes, which is why it's worth asking.

You don't need to wait until your periods stop to talk to your GP.

Strength training is widely recommended through this stage, for muscle and bone. Livewell is built for women in exactly this stage, 35 to 60.

Most of the reasons people give for strength training are about the body. Stronger legs, better bone, fitting into something.

There's another one. Research links regular strength training with better mood and better sleep.

It isn't a treatment for anything, and it won't fix a hard week. But a lot of people say they sleep better and feel steadier once training becomes a habit.

And every few weeks the weight goes up a little. Not many things in adult life give you progress you can count.

If you're having a hard time, talk to your GP, or call Samaritans free, any time, on 116 123.

Going on your own makes it easy to stop. Nobody notices when you don't show up.

Come with someone and that changes. It's harder to skip a session when someone else is getting ready too.

You don't have to lift the same weights, and one of you will probably be stronger at first. That's fine.

Two sessions a week. One lift. Two evenings out together.

It doesn't have to be a partner. A friend, a sister, a neighbour.

Most people blame their posture for a sore back or neck. Shoulders forward, slumped at the desk.

For most people, there isn't one right way to sit. The problem is staying in any position for hours.

Change position every half hour. Get up, fill the kettle, stand for a phone call.

Strength in your back and hips helps too. It makes every position easier to hold, and easier to get out of.

If the pain is severe, spreads down a leg, or comes with numbness, see your GP or a physio first.

A lot of people with high blood pressure avoid weights because they think lifting is the dangerous part.

For most people it's the opposite. Resistance training is widely recommended for people with high blood pressure.

Your pressure does go up while you lift. That's normal, and it comes back down when you stop.

The one thing to watch is holding your breath. Breathe out as you push.

If you're on medication for it, it isn't well controlled, or you've never had it checked, see your GP before you start. Then tell us, and we'll build the session around it.

168 hours in a week. We're asking for two.

That's 1.2%. Slide two shows it β€” your week as squares, two of them coloured in.

So it's rarely the time.

It's more often not knowing what to do when you walk in, or being sure everyone else does. Nobody wants to be the beginner at 55.

Fair enough. That's the bit we sort out, and it takes about one session.

Two sessions a week. An hour each. That's all it takes.

Ask most people what a coach does and they'll say they count your reps or tell you what weight to use. Neither is really it.

Watch a set of ten from the outside. The first rep looks fine β€” the first rep nearly always looks fine. Somewhere around five a knee starts drifting inward, by an amount far too small for the person lifting to feel. By eight the back is rounding slightly to get the weight up, and they still feel strong, because effort and technique come apart well before anyone notices.

That's the bit worth paying attention to. Not the number on the dumbbell.

It's also why a coached set usually stops before you run out. The last two or three reps of a set where your form has already gone aren't earning you much, and they're the ones you'd rather not have done.

You can feel how hard something is. You can't see your own back. Nobody can, from the inside.

A three-year-old weighs about 14kg. That doesn't change.

The bag of coal is still 20kg. The suitcase is still 20kg. Same as they were ten years ago.

You're the part that changes.

At forty, carrying a child up the stairs is nothing. You don't think about it. Leave it twenty years and the same child on the same stairs is a job. You feel it in your legs at the top, and you put them down sooner than you'd like to.

Nobody trains to get good at training. They train so the ordinary stuff stays ordinary. Lifting a grandchild. Getting the case in the boot. Carrying the shopping in one go instead of two.

Two sessions a week keeps it that way.

Most people who stop going never actually decide to stop. They miss a fortnight β€” a holiday, a bad flu, a stretch at work where it just wasn't happening β€” and somewhere in that second week they quietly conclude they've lost it, and that going back now would mean starting from scratch.

The muscles look flatter within a few days and that's the bit that fools everyone, but it's water and glycogen rather than muscle and it fills back out almost immediately. Strength itself holds on far longer than people expect. The thing that genuinely slips over a fortnight is cardio fitness, and that's also the thing that comes back quickest once you're moving again.

So the two weeks costs you very little. What costs you is the decision that follows it, and that one is never two weeks long. It's three months, and then it's next January.

If it happens, go back to the weight you left on. Not lighter. It'll feel harder for one session and normal by the next.

Ask most women what they're training for and they'll say energy, or strength, or fitting back into something. Almost nobody says bone.

It's the one that runs quietly. There's no ache, no stiffness, nothing you'd notice β€” bone thins without giving you a single symptom, and for a lot of people the first they hear about it is a wrist that breaks from a fall that shouldn't have broken anything.

What's going on underneath is that your skeleton is being broken down and rebuilt constantly, all your life. Oestrogen helps hold those two processes in balance. When it drops at menopause, the breaking down starts to run ahead of the rebuilding, and that's not a contested area of science β€” it's why the years around menopause matter.

The useful part is that bone is load-responsive. Muscle pulling on bone is the signal it answers to, which is why resistance work and time on your feet do something for it that swimming and cycling don't β€” both are good for you, they just don't load bone.

If you're past menopause, it's worth a conversation with your GP about a DEXA scan. And if you've already been diagnosed, don't just start lifting β€” some movements need changing, and the programme should be built around that.
