• Heartburn: A burning feeling in your chest, often worse when you lie down or bend over.
• Acid Reflux: A sour taste or backflow of stomach acid into your throat.
• Regurgitation: Food or liquid moving back up into your mouth.
• Belching: Frequent burping or air release.
• Chest Discomfort: Tightness or pain behind the breastbone, sometimes mimicking heart issues.
• Difficulty Swallowing: Feeling like food gets stuck in your throat (dysphagia).
• Heart palpitations or rapid pulse: Pressure on the vagus nerve from a herniated stomach can trigger sudden changes in heart rate.
• Shortness of breath or chest tightness: Physical compression of the diaphragm and lungs makes deep breathing difficult.
• Lump in the throat (globus sensation): Acid irritation or muscle tension creates a persistent feeling that something is stuck.
• Hoarseness or chronic cough: Stomach acid rises into the larynx and irritates the vocal cords.
• Dizziness or anxiety: Vagus nerve irritation can mimic panic attacks, lightheadedness, or sudden anxiety.
A hiatal hernia can cause uncommon or "weird" symptoms like heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and a lump in the throat because the displaced stomach irritates the nearby vagus nerve and presses against the diaphragm.
Increased Abdominal Pressure (The "Push" Factors)
Any force that repeatedly puts intense, physical pressure on your midsection can force the top of the stomach upward through the hiatus:
• Chronic coughing or sneezing: Frequently seen in individuals with chronic lung conditions like COPD or severe allergies.
• Straining during bowel movements: Chronic constipation forces significant abdominal exertion.
• Obesity: Carrying excess weight, particularly around the belly, continuously squeezes the internal abdominal organs.
• Pregnancy and childbirth: The growing fetus alters internal spacing and increases pressure against the diaphragm.
• Frequent vomiting: The violent, upward muscle contractions of vomiting can dislodge the stomach tissue.
• Intense physical exertion: Heavy lifting, improper weightlifting techniques, or sudden strenuous physical labor.
