Feeling like you’re making progress, only to face another setback?

That was Pete’s experience. He’d been dealing with bulging discs and had tried physio, but kept finding himself back in the same cycle.

Since joining FP Dublin, he’s been going from strength to strength. Here, he shares his experience in his own words.

Thanks for sharing your story, Pete 💪

CLIENT RESULT - OSTEITIS P***S

Seamus is a great example of what can happen when you stop chasing symptoms and start looking at how the body functions as a whole.

When he first came to us, he was struggling with suspected osteitis p***s. Every time he tried to play football, particularly when changing direction, he would experience sharp pain around his groin and adductors, sometimes reaching 7–8/10.

He had already tried traditional physiotherapy, strength training and mobility exercises, but nothing seemed to be getting him back playing consistently.

We worked with Seamus over approximately 18 months, completing around 15 sessions. Because he lived over two hours away, regular appointments weren't always possible.

But what really stood out was how much work he put in himself.

He followed his programme, educated himself through the Functional Patterns online courses and consistently applied what he was learning between sessions.

The photos show some interesting changes in his posture, particularly through the spine, ribcage and overall trunk alignment.

But the biggest result wasn't how he looked.

It was getting back to playing football pain-free, while also competing in 100m sprint races.

For us, this is why looking beyond the site of pain is so important. Sometimes the area causing you problems isn't the only area that needs attention.

Seamus deserves huge credit for the work he put in. A great example of what consistency and a more individualised approach to movement can achieve.

Is getting stronger in the gym always going to make you a better athlete?

A recent exchange with raised an interesting debate.

As a former strength and conditioning coach and physiotherapist, I think we're oversimplifying athletic performance when we reduce it to how much weight someone can lift, how much power they produce, or where their training sits on the force-velocity curve.

We've seen strength and conditioning become an increasingly important part of field sports, yet injuries remain a major concern.

Are we doing enough to understand the individual athlete's biomechanics and physical capacity before prescribing how they should train?

Strength matters. Power matters. But there's a lot more to athletic performance than either. This is not meant to be disrespectful to Gavin but it brings about a larger question.

Is this way of training actually improving the users ability to move across the board? Are we cherry picking high level athletes and comparing that outcome too broadly?

Obviously all injuries are not avoidable when playing high level contact sports, but should we set the bar higher in terms of what we expect our training to achieve?

Interested to hear people's thoughts.

Yoga? Pilates? Weightlifting? Which exercise is actually best for you?

With so much conflicting advice, it’s easy to feel confused about what your body needs.

A useful starting question is: how is your training improving your posture and the way you move?

At Functional Patterns Dublin, we focus on the Big 4: standing, walking, running and throwing. These give us a foundation for assessing movement and guiding our training.

Alongside getting stronger or fitter, we want to see those improvements carry over into how you move outside the gym. If there is no evidence of such, it might be worth changing how you look at things.

Is your training helping you move better? If you are unsure, send us a DM and we will reach out and help you get started.

Weekly roundup with just a few of the hardworking clients we have had in this week. Great to see people progressing and taking the necessary steps to understand their body more.

There is a level of detail that we are trying to account for that seems to be missing in the rest of the industry. So much so that others can think we are fear mongering people regarding how they move.

We just call it setting the bar a little bit higher. People come to us because they want to understand the nuts and bolts. They are actively seeking answers and understanding.

Lucky for us these clients are the best to deal with and make our job a real privilege and very enjoyable. If you want to get on the graduate program and learn how these things work so you can take the power back into your own hands, get in touch and get started.
