To mark National Breastfeeding Week, Bainne Beatha was delighted to be invited to Leinster House by Marie Sherlock TD, Chair of the Breastfeeding Parliamentary Committee, alongside Marie Sherlock TD Jennifer Murnane O’Connor S***a Clarke TD Darren O'Rourke Pádraig Rice TD Barry Ward TD 🇮🇪🇪🇺 Roderic O'Gorman TD Emer Higgins TD and representatives from other breastfeeding organisations Baby Feeding Law Group Ireland and La Leche League Ireland

The discussion recognised the progress made in supporting breastfeeding in Ireland, including initiatives already established and the development of a new national report. It also provided an opportunity to discuss the work still needed, including filling vacant lactation consultant posts and identifying further measures to ensure mothers and babies can access the support they need.

We welcome the continued engagement of parliamentarians in this important area. While progress is welcome, it is vital that commitments translate into meaningful, accessible support for breastfeeding families across Ireland.

Breastfeeding in Her Words -

Day 7 National Breastfeeding Week final day.

In 2022, thousands of women took part in a breastfeeding study conducted in collaboration with TU Dublin.

Their experiences, including the challenges, the joys, the support they received, and the support they needed, helped give a voice to women’s real experiences of breastfeeding in Ireland. In 2024 the Health Research Board gave funding to do a more detailed analysis of the data, and the study of the data is ongoing.

This National Breastfeeding Week, we want to share some of those voices.
