World Mental Health Day 2026.
Not just today, but everyday, we are aware of the importance of health- that is, physical and mental health.

There is still much stigma in relation to mental health, still an unawareness as to how mental ILLhealth can affect people and how that shows up in their life. The knock on result of this can very often lead people not seeking help or only when they’ve reached crisis point.

Don’t wait or delay, if something feels β€œoff” or you find yourself questioning things, reach out. Start with your GP or someone you trust.

We all have physical and mental health and at different stages and events in our lives, our health can be affected.
That is not a failure, there is no shame.
Shame thrives in secrecy.
You deserve your place in this world πŸ’œπŸ’š

NEDRC’s Assistant Director and Director of Services had the privilege of attending Stormont, the Northern Ireland Parliament on Friday to celebrate the wonderful, dedicated, years of hard work and commitment of people to establish the first Perinatal Mother and Baby Unit (first on the whole island of Ireland!).
Well done to everyone on the ground who work tirelessly- the many volunteers, people with lived experience, healthcare professionals- all without funding/ finance, but with a genuine compassion, mission, understanding and love.

We also know, only too well, how difficult, tedious, long, at times soul destroying, it is to get β€œthe right” people to listen and build the political will for action (if at all)!
But you all did it.
Yes there are more stages of the process to happen but it’s already started and commitment has been given from all sides of your community.
We know, the positive impact this will have on women, their babies, their family and society as a whole, as a result of this support and care at the right time.
Congratulations to you all, Comhghairdeas libh πŸ’œ

Maternal Mental Health Alliance report that as many as 1 in 4 women will experience mental health difficulties in the perinatal period (pregnancy and up to 12 months after birth of baby). This also includes women with eating disorders in pregnancy and post.
It is vital that services for women and their babies are provided.
Let’s hope today brings better news for women, their babies and families.

We must always provide hope and keep keep going, especially for those whose hope and strength might be wavering. We see you, we feel you πŸ’œ

We have seen an increase of calls from people who are using GLP-1 medications and also from families who are concerned about their loved one’s use.
While GLP-1 medications have a medical purpose for some, continuous medical oversight and appropriate prescribing is essential but unfortunately not always happening.
If you are concerned please contact your GP in the first instance or for further information call 01 5644450 and a member of our NEDRC team will provide non-judgmental support in confidence.

Link to article below from the Journal of American Medical Association Psychiatry: GLP-1 receptor agonist use and misuse were common among people with eating disorders, with many reporting adverse events, reinforcing the need for pharmacovigilance.

What a busy summer so far.......

Β°We've had the first NEDRC staff baby- congratulations to the wonderful Clare & husband on their gorgeous new arrival baby 🍼🀱 Evidence that recovery is real and always possible πŸ’œ

Β°Staff have engaged in Continuous Professional Development- πŸŒπŸ’» UCD Medical School, Balint supervision, Trauma informed practice, CBT-ED, Dietetic conference, screening for addictions/ reliance on drugs or alcohol, multiple higher level courses on eating disorders & self-harm, body dysmorphia, autism.

°Providing training for other healthcare professionals & students 🀝

Β°Plenty of cuppas, chats, laughs, tears of loss & sadness but also of joy, hugs, walking & talking, enjoying sunny weather, music πŸ«‚πŸŒβ˜•πŸͺ‰πŸŽΈπŸŽ€

Β°And most importantly, continuing to be part of clients' recovery journey, witnessing their personal growth and drive for the life they want to live, is the most exhilarating and humbling experience for us. πŸ’œ
It drives us in our ongoing research, review, improvements on doing things even better and supporting those clients who come to us, initially with little hope for recovery, to helping them discover their worth and way in life. 🌠

Celebrating πŸŽ‰ πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ PRIDE

What does PRIDE mean to you?

P: Perseverance β€” remaining strong despite difficulty, oppression or discouragement.

R: Resilience β€” developing ways to deal with tough situations and not letting these situations stop you from progressing in your life.

I: Inclusion β€” creating an environment where people feel heard, seen, empowered and able to achieve and access systems available to everybody else.

D: Determination β€” continuing to stand firm in your goals and rights even when faced with judgment, ignorance, and bigotry.

E: Expression β€” making your thoughts, feelings and self, known to others.

May we continue to be allies to the LGBTQ+ community and call out discrimination, abuse, inequalities and ignorance when we see it.

Thank you to the community for sharing yourselves with the world, making it a brighter, fun, safer place for many.

Happy Pride to all πŸ₯°
