My sons have this dream: to compete on Ireland's Fittest Family.
Well, someday.
While they are too young, we made the most of the awkward day off and ticked something off of our "To-Do List": find a fun place where we could try to run up a half-pipe (Eliminator) style ramp. Now, I had to be able to do it with them - none of these bouncy places where adults are forceably exiled to dismal sticky tables with sad papercups of tea.
We did find a place -- and jumped, ran, climbed, slid, and crawled for 2 hours. I'm not gonna lie - it was a tough day. My children's relentless pace would rival the endurance of any HIIT or Hyrox instructor.
When patients say to me: "I need to get healthier to keep up with my kids." I hear them. I know that they mean all the: "Catch me!" "Run with me!" "Jump! Jump!" "C'mon with me!" They resist and resent being pushed to life's sidelines of the sticky tables with sad papercups of tea due to chronic disease and aging. We all deserve a level of health that makes the rollercoaster, pedal kart, zip line, or trampoline at least an option. For some patients, there is a path back to the top of the slide or zipline. For others, they have health conditions that will limit them regardless.
For those that have that option, "I should be fitter" isn't always a goal that matters. It's just a way to get where you need to be: whether that is up a mountain, across the line at a 5K, cycling to work, still being able to put on your own socks at age 95 -- or crawling under a cargo net after a maniacally laughing 8 year old.
In the meantime, it looks like I have only 6 years to ramp up (pun intended) my current running regime to get better at wall climbing.
