How do I interpret my FIT results? 💙

The Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) checks for tiny amounts of hidden blood in your stool. Our guide explains GastroLife’s result ranges:

🟢 Below 25 ng/mL — Low result: no measurable blood, or only a very small amount detected.

🟠 25–99 ng/mL — Blood detected: this does not mean bowel cancer. Discuss your result with your GP.

🔴 100 ng/mL or above — A higher amount of blood detected. Contact your GP promptly to discuss further investigation.

A low FIT result does not completely rule out bowel cancer. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice regardless of your result.

GastroLife provides testing only. Your GP or consultant should consider your results alongside your symptoms and medical history.

How does your body digest food and absorb its nutrients? 🍽️

Your pancreas, liver and gallbladder each play a part:

🔹 The pancreas produces enzymes that break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
🔹 The liver makes bile, which helps turn large fat droplets into smaller ones so enzymes can digest them more easily.
🔹 The gallbladder stores bile and releases it into the small intestine when you eat.

Tonight’s blog explains how these processes work together, why some people struggle with fatty foods, and where a faecal pancreatic elastase test may be useful.

What can a stool test tell you about your pancreas? 🧪

Your pancreas produces enzymes that help break down the food you eat. A faecal elastase test measures one of these enzymes in your stool, helping assess whether your pancreas is producing enough digestive enzymes.

In this video, we explain what the test checks and how you can collect your sample at home with GastroLife.

Your results should be reviewed with your GP or consultant alongside your symptoms and medical history.

Ever noticed your stomach feels unsettled when you’re worried? 🧠💙

Those familiar “butterflies” are one example of the connection between your gut and brain. Stress can affect how your digestive system moves and how strongly you feel sensations, contributing to bloating, nausea, cramps or changes in bowel habits.

Our latest blog explains why this happens and what may help—from regular activity and better sleep to making time to relax.

If symptoms keep coming back, speak with your GP rather than assuming stress is the only cause.

🔥 Heartburn, acid reflux or the feeling that food is sticking when you swallow?

Our latest patient guide explains what causes reflux, why symptoms can worsen after meals or when lying down, and when to seek medical advice.

Simple changes may help:
✅ Try smaller meals if large portions trigger symptoms.
✅ Stay upright after eating.
✅ Allow around three hours between eating and going to bed.
✅ Identify your own food and drink triggers—everyone is different.

⚠️ New or recurring swallowing difficulties need prompt assessment. Contact your GP for an urgent appointment rather than assuming they are caused by reflux.

What is faecal calprotectin, and why is it tested? 🔬

Faecal calprotectin is a stool test that measures a marker of inflammation in the bowel. It can help your doctor investigate digestive symptoms and distinguish between inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, and non-inflammatory conditions such as IBS.

A raised result does not identify the cause on its own. Your GP or consultant will interpret it alongside your symptoms and medical history.

🏡 GastroLife offers home testing:
• Collect your stool sample using the kit provided.
• Complete the paperwork and return your sample as instructed.
• Share your report with your GP or consultant.

Watch our video to see how it works.

What actually happens to food after you eat it? 🍽️

Your stomach is just one part of the journey!

Digestion begins in your mouth, where chewing and saliva prepare food for swallowing. Your stomach mixes it with digestive juices, before the small intestine continues digestion and absorbs most nutrients. The large intestine then absorbs water and helps form stool.

Our latest article explains each stage in simple terms, including how the pancreas, liver and gallbladder help along the way.

Did you know your gut keeps working between meals? 🧹

The migrating motor complex (MMC) acts as a “housekeeping” system, helping move leftover food particles and digestive secretions through the stomach and small intestine.

When this activity is impaired, it can contribute to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
