Bowel cancer.
Bowel cancer is the 2nd most common cause of cancer in Ireland. Last year there were 2,600 cases of bowel cancer in Ireland.
Studies have shown that screening reduces the number of deaths from bowel cancer by finding cancers early. 25% of bowel cancers are picked up through screening. People have a better chance of survival with early treatment.
Factors that contribute to bowel cancer include;
Age. (older people are more likely to get bowel cancer)(57 to 71)
History. (maybe genetic)
Smoking.
Too much alcohol.
Unhealthy diet.
Being obese or very much overweight.
Lack of physical activity.
If you are between 57 and 71 and have any of the above factors then you should get involved in bowel screening. Bowel screening is only for those who have no symptoms.
If you have symptoms you should see your GP immediately.
Symptoms of bowel cancer include blood in the stools, re**al bleeding, pain, bloating and weight loss.
Only one in a thousand who get screened get bowel cancer.
You can get your bowel screen pack from the HSE.

The actual screening is very simple. Contact the HSE; they will send you a bowel screen pack. Inside the pack there is a small tube. Open it and use the small stick inside to wipe a small bit of poo onto the stick. Place the stick into the tube and free post the whole lot.
