💚 World Mental Health Day | 10 October
Being heard matters. At every age.
When we check in on an older relative, neighbour or friend, we might ask about their medication, appointments or whether they have eaten. But “How are you feeling?” deserves a place in that conversation too.
This year’s World Health Organization theme, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change”, highlights the importance of involving people with experience of mental health difficulties in the decisions that affect their lives.
For older people, that means taking their feelings seriously, respecting their choices and giving them space to talk without making assumptions about what they need.
Bereavement, changes in health, retirement or losing everyday social connections can affect emotional wellbeing. Someone may be finding things difficult even when they seem to be managing.
Small ways to offer support include:
• Making time for a conversation without rushing
• Listening without dismissing feelings or trying to fix everything
• Asking what would help, rather than assuming
• Staying in touch regularly
• Helping someone stay connected to the people and activities that matter to them
At RHS Home Care, we recognise the value of everyday connection: a familiar face, a shared conversation and time to listen.
If you or someone close to you is struggling, speaking to a GP can be a helpful first step. A conversation can open the door to support, and nobody should feel their concerns matter less because of their age.
