We came out of the theatre last night to the incredibly sad news of Dolly Parton’s passing.

Myself and my sister were lucky enough to have seen Dolly in concert twice. She was amazing, her energy, she danced around the stage in sky high heels and changed fabulous rhinestoned tasselled costumes about a dozen times! Her talent, she played pretty much every instrument you can think of plus about 3 I’d never seen before! Her heart, she told stories and shared memories like we were old friends and made the Three Arena seem as intimate as a snug in the local pub.

Her songs are like the soundtrack to my life, 9 to 5 will forever be the song that makes me hit the dance floor and lifts me out of any bad mood instantly. Only a few weeks ago we got a bang on the wall from our neighbours in Mallorca who weren’t too impressed with me singing Islands in the Stream at 1.30am. Sacrifice will always make me cry. And Joelene will forever trigger my crazy jealous heart.

Thank you Dolly for all of it. Rest in peace. The most fabulous angel in heaven.

Today would have been my grandmother Niney’s 100th birthday. The woman who raised the legend that is Standad.

I have so may memories from my 21 years with Niney. Every time I mash an egg for a salad, or wake up with my glasses on, or pour a sneaky baileys, or make anything with pastry, or sew some dolls clothes or find myself humming a hymn or watch Claudia deal a mean hand in cards, or smell a silver mint I think of Niney.

But thinking about her today it’s her courage that I remember the most.

Courage to go to Dublin to train as a nurse. Courage to leave home and a job she wanted to marry so young. Courage to be a farmers wife. Courage to be without her kids when they were off at school. Courage to navigate the difficulties she faced. Courage to travel to Canada alone. Courage to start a new life as a widow. Courage to make new friends, rekindle old friendships and keep them. Courage to live alone. Courage to travel to the holy lands. Courage to look after not only her own family both extended and close but to embrace friends like family. Courage to care and heal and comfort. Courage to laugh with all her heart. Courage to speak without a filter. Courage to face her illness at the end. Courage to fight til we were all there with her to say goodbye. That’s the part of her I want to live as a legacy of love and gratitude to her. 💞

I know she’s smiling down on us all today, cringing at this post, mortified we’re making a fuss of her big day. 💞🎂

A moment of calm for all you fellow exam parents this morning. They’ve got this! We’ve got this!

06/05/2026

A simple yet super effective Self-Compassion practice for exam students everywhere!

Step 1- This is hard, this is tough, I don’t deserve this, I don’t want this, this is suffering

Step 2- I am not alone. This suffering is what makes me human. Exams have been stressful since they began and they will continue to be stressful into the future. I am not alone in this suffering.

Step 3- be kind to yourself. I’ve got this, I can do this, I am enough, I have done lots, I know this, I am capable.

Wishing all students and their parents love, peace and compassion for the weeks ahead.

When I hear people talking about fulfilling lifelong dreams of running a marathon, or climbing a mountain, or writing a book I have often felt like I must lack ambition or drive because I don’t have something I’ve “always dreamed of doing”.

But in fact I do. From before I can remember I dreamed of being a mom. I mothered my baby sister from the second she was born, I mothered little cousins, neighbours, children I baby sat and random kids on holidays! At 14 I started teaching dance and my “babies” began to grow and grow. Many of whom are now moms themselves but will always be my first babies.

My path to motherhood has certainly not been easy, as I have spoken about many times before. Each day continues to bring new challenges as my three completely unique girls grow into amazing women.

I don’t savour every second, I lose my sh*t, I escape to the solitude of the car from time to time, I often bend under the load and can get overwhelmed by the magnitude of responsibility. But it is still my dream come true. I pinch myself that I have been this lucky.

I am grateful every single day that I get to be a mom, I am grateful for the other women that are travelling alongside me on this path, I am grateful to be able to support moms in the work I do, I am grateful for my Spanish and Mexican daughters who I’ve been lucky enough to mother for even a short time, I am grateful to be a mom in Ireland with the freedoms and safety that brings, I am grateful for this miraculous journey and excited and hopeful for what lies ahead.
