💚 Today, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day.
Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. It also includes wellbeing, concentration, emotional resilience, and the ability to gradually regain balance after difficult or traumatic experiences — at our own pace and with the right support.
It means noticing our thoughts, understanding our emotions, and learning to regulate them. It is not about excluding sadness, anger, or fear, but about accepting different emotions and integrating them into our experience.
How can we naturally support our mental health?
1. Nurturing close relationships.
Relationships with family, children, and close friends give us a sense of connection and support. If those connections are missing, a support group or welcoming community can help us feel that we belong.
2. Connecting with nature — “green therapies”.
A forest, lake, garden, or walk in the park can help us reduce stress, feel calmer, and recharge. Give yourself a moment to breathe and connect with nature.
3. Eating a balanced diet.
Include vitamins, minerals, and enough protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. Try to limit highly processed foods and excess sugar.
4. Addressing nutritional deficiencies and choosing individual support.
Appropriate supplementation may help when deficiencies are present. It should be tailored to your needs, blood test results, and any medication you take.
5. Regular physical activity.
Choose movement that suits your age, abilities, and wellbeing: brisk walking, exercise, yoga, Pilates, or dancing. Find something you enjoy.
6. Limiting screen time
Less time on our phones and computers creates more space for rest, relationships, and being present.
7. Activities that bring satisfaction and a sense of purpose.
Work we enjoy, hobbies, or helping others.
8. Good, restorative sleep.
Most adults need around 7–9 hours of sleep each night, although individual needs vary. Prioritise a regular sleep routine, good sleep quality, and enough time to rest. Women need more sleep.
9. Fun, dancing, and laughter!
Our mental health also needs joy, playfulness, moments when we have a good time.
