"Could I get my Achilles back pain free for the championship? " was one of the main questions I had a few months ago.
In my first post on this I outlined where I had to shift my training. And my pain had reduced, but it was still lingering and affecting my performance.
With the guidance of Mimi Rasenberger I focused on pushing the numbers a bit more.
I surprised myself where I have gotten to! (Last slide shows the progress there)
SL Calf raise from 30kg - 72.5kg
Eccentric from 60kg - 90kg
Lots of consistent and frequent calf strengthening and added in more inner range and tib post work, and pain continued to subside.
I could then start to do a bit more on the pitch rather than extra off-feet work. (yay 🙌)
As with most rehab, it wasn't/isn't a straight line to being all better.
I played one match feeling very good, no achilles pain at all.
But still had pain in the morning, or feel it again a little at the next training.
But it kept improving, and I was pain free for the last 2 weeks of training and matches that we had.
Unfortunately we lost out in the Semi Final by 2pts, but I was able play without injury holding me back.
If you take anything from these posts on my Achilles rehab I hope that it includes:
- we are stronger/capable of more than we think in the gym
- to modify training around injury instead of trying to ignore it and push through
- seeking help/advice and getting a structured plan in place will help you quicker than on your own.
p.s. The off-season is the best time to address any niggles or development areas before next season gets underway.
