πŸ”₯ Do You Need to Shoulder Press Your Bodyweight for a Kipping Handstand Push-up? πŸ€”

Kipping handstand push-ups (HSPUs) are the ultimate test of strength, balance, and control. But here's the big question: Do you need to press your entire bodyweight to nail them?

πŸ’ͺ The truth
Strict barbell shoulder presses are excellent for building strength. However, most people find that pressing around 70-80% of their body weight is enough to master the kipping HSPU.

πŸ€Έβ€β™‚οΈ Strength isn't everything
Technique, balance, and body alignment are just as important. Refining these skills can make the kipping HSPU achievable without pressing your entire body weight.

πŸ’¬ Let's hear it
How close are you to pressing your body weight? Has shoulder pressing helped you on your kipping HSPU journey? Drop your progress in the comments below!

Do sumo and conventional deadlifts work the same muscles? πŸ€”πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Yes… but not exactly.

Both variations involve many of the same major muscle groups, including the glutes, hamstrings, quads, and back muscles. πŸ’ͺ

But changing your stance also changes the mechanics of the lift. βš™οΈ

With the wider stance used in the sumo deadlift, the hip adductors tend to contribute more to the movement. 🦡

In the conventional deadlift, the torso is typically more horizontal, increasing the demand on the spinal erectors.

So choosing a different deadlift variation doesn’t necessarily mean using a completely different set of muscles. It can change how much each muscle contributes to the movement. 🧠

Don’t just perform the exercise. Understand it. πŸ”

What is the best squat variation for gluteus maximus and hip adductor hypertrophy? πŸ’ͺ

πŸ…°οΈ Half Squat
πŸ…±οΈ Full Squat

The answer is ...
πŸ…±οΈ Full Squat

Here's why:
A study by Kubo et al. (2019) compared full squats (140Β° knee flexion) to half squats (90Β° knee flexion) over ten weeks. MRI measured muscle volumes before and after training.

Findings:
πŸ‘ Both squats increased quad equally.
πŸ‘‰ Full squats led to a 6.7% increase in gluteus maximus volume, compared to 2.2% with half squats.
πŸ‘‰ Full squats also led to a 6.2% increase in adductor volume, compared to 2.7% with half squats.

These findings suggest that deep squats, in which the lifter descends to a greater depth, more effectively promote hypertrophy in the gluteus maximus and adductor muscles. Half squats involving a limited range of motion appear to have a lesser impact on gluteal and adductor muscle growth.

The Kettlebell Halo is a great exercise to include in your shoulder warm-up. πŸ”₯

Moving the kettlebell around your head takes the shoulders through multiple positions while challenging mobility, control, and stability.

Keep the movement smooth and controlled, and try to minimize movement of the head and trunk.

A simple exercise to prepare your shoulders before training. πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Ever wondered what happens if you fail a heavy squat? πŸ‘€

Knowing how to bail safely can give you the confidence to train harder while reducing unnecessary risk.

Here's one of the safest ways to escape a failed squat when using a power rack.

Build Bigger Triceps with Dumbbells! πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯

Want to grow stronger, more defined arms? The seated dumbbell overhead tricep extension is a must-try!

By positioning your arms overhead (shoulder flexion), this exercise stretches the triceps in their lengthened state, an optimal stimulus for muscle growth and hypertrophy πŸ’₯

πŸ’‘ Focus on controlled reps, feel the stretch, and push your triceps to the limit!

πŸ€” Which is better for re**us femoris hypertrophy? πŸ…°οΈ or πŸ…±οΈ?

Recent research by Larsen et al. (2024) compared two hip flexion positions during leg extensions:
πŸ…°οΈ Sitting upright with 90Β° hip flexion
πŸ…±οΈ Reclining with 40Β° hip flexion

πŸ“ˆ Answer:
Position πŸ…±οΈ led to greater re**us femoris hypertrophy, while there were no significant differences in vastus lateralis hypertrophy between the positions.

πŸ’‘ Why did position πŸ…±οΈ lead to more hypertrophy?
The researchers suggest that the greater muscle length achieved in the re**us femoris with a 40Β° hip flexion angle results in higher mechanical tension, a key stimulus for muscle hypertrophy.

πŸ’₯ Unlock the Power of Trunk Rotation! πŸŒ€

The trunk horizontal rotation with a resistance band is a fantastic way to strengthen your core while improving rotational movement.

This exercise activates the internal oblique on one side and the external oblique on the opposite side, working together to drive powerful and controlled rotation. But there's more! Deep stabilizers like the multifidus and other rotators between the vertebrae ensure smooth, efficient movement while protecting the spine.

At Muscle & Motion, we're here to help you train smarter. πŸ“²

The Somersault Squat is a great exercise for challenging your quadriceps through a deep range of knee flexion. πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Unlike a traditional squat, the movement is highly knee-dominant, with large knee motion and relatively little hip motion.

A great squat variation for putting more focus on the quads. πŸ”₯

BENCH PRESS POWERLIFTING STYLE πŸ”₯

The bench press is a widely-used exercise for both powerlifting and bodybuilding. Powerlifters use it to increase strength and press as much weight as possible, while bodybuilders use it to gain muscle size.
The technique used to perform the bench press and how you structure your training program will vary depending on your goals.

What is unique about the powerlifting style❓
The primary purpose of the powerlifting style is to press as much weight as possible from the chest until you lock out your elbows. Powerlifters arch their back and lift their chest up in order to reduce the distance the barbell needs to travel from the starting position to the chest, thus allowing them to lift heavier weights.

Are you a powerlifter who uses this style? Let us know in a comment πŸ’¬ below ⬇️
