Breast Cancer Awareness Month honors the patients fighting this disease and the oncology nurses who care for them every step of the way.

Administering chemotherapy safely takes more than skill. It requires proven systems to protect nurses from occupational exposure to hazardous drugs.

We are dedicated to supporting oncology teams with closed drug delivery and CSTD solutions that protect both patients and healthcare professionals throughout treatment.

Hazardous drugs extend beyond chemotherapy, but are they always recognized?

A 2025 study of nurses and midwives at six Australian hospitals found that 80.6% of participants failed to identify chloramphenicol as hazardous, 73.8% missed colchicine, and 68.2% missed dutasteride.

An antibiotic, a treatment for inflammatory conditions, and a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Different therapeutic uses, yet all three are classified as hazardous drugs.
If a drug isn't recognized as hazardous, will the appropriate precautions be taken?
Our blog explores the study’s findings on hazard recognition, training, and personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and what they mean for hazardous drug safety across hospital departments.

Recognizing a hazardous drug is the first step. Our blog also explains how Chemfort® CSTD supports a comprehensive approach to safer handling, helping minimize occupational exposure during preparation and administration.

New research highlights - Chemfort® CSTD in supporting safer preparation

We’re pleased to recognize pharmacist Knowles and colleagues for their recently published research in Antimicrobial Resistance, exploring the use of Chemfort® Closed System Transfer Devices (CSTDs) in the preparation of . Braun Easypump® II elastomeric devices for outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT).

The study reported encouraging findings:

Elastomeric devices prepared using Chemfort® CSTDs showed no microbial contamination (0 out of 23, 0%), whereas 5 out of 23 devices (22%) prepared using traditional needles and syringes showed contamination.

⏱️ Preparation using CSTDs was also faster and more consistent, with a median preparation time of 26 minutes vs. 34 minutes using needles and syringes.

The findings suggest that Chemfort® CSTD could offer a valuable risk reduction approach for nurse-prepared elastomeric infusions, while also supporting a more efficient preparation process with all the benefits of at-home care.

👏 Congratulations to Louisa Knowles and the entire research team on this important contribution to OPAT and aseptic preparation research.

Closed System Drug-Transfer Devices (CSTDs) are designed to limit occupational exposure to hazardous drugs, but not all CSTDs approach containment the same way.

Chemfort® ToxiGuard® uses a patented drug-binding matrix, integrated into the Chemfort® Vial Adaptor, that pairs a 100% activated carbon layer with a 0.2 μm hydrophobic and oleophobic membrane. The result is a system that actively adsorbs hazardous drug vapors, aerosols, and droplets while maintaining a sterile drug pathway, backed by 15 years of science and peer-reviewed studies.

In our latest article, we look at how this dual mechanism works, and what it means for hazardous drug containment in both pharmacy and nursing settings.
