What is an oroantral fistula and why does it happen? An oroantral fistula is an abnormal communication between the mouth and the maxillary sinus, which can sometimes occur after extraction of an upper back tooth because of the close relationship between the tooth roots and the sinus. Dental infection, trauma and previous surgery can also contribute. Symptoms may include fluid passing between the mouth and nose, persistent discharge, an unusual passage of air and recurrent sinus problems. Treatment depends on the size and duration of the opening and whether there is associated sinus infection; persistent fistulas may require surgical closure.
