Fatty Liver and Its Link to Diabetes, High Cholesterol, and High Blood Pressure

Fatty liver disease, now often called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells. It often causes no symptoms in the early stages, so many people live with it for years without knowing. Yet fatty liver is more than a liver problem. It is closely tied to how the whole body handles sugar and fat.

When fat accumulates in the liver, the liver becomes less responsive to insulin. Over time this insulin resistance can raise blood sugar levels and lead to type 2 diabetes. A fatty liver also produces and releases more triglycerides and "bad" LDL cholesterol into the blood, which can cause high cholesterol. In addition, the inflammation and insulin resistance linked to fatty liver can strain the blood vessels and increase the risk of high blood pressure.

In medical terms, fatty liver doesn't literally "turn into" these conditions. It shares the same root causes (obesity, poor diet, inactivity, and insulin resistance) and each condition tends to worsen the others. Left untreated, fatty liver can also progress to liver inflammation (steatohepatitis), scarring (fibrosis), cirrhosis, and even liver cancer, while raising the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The good news is that fatty liver is often reversible in its early stages. Losing 5-10% of body weight, eating a balanced diet low in refined sugar and processed foods, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol, and managing blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure can reduce liver fat and lower the risk of these complications. Early detection through routine checkups and a liver ultrasound or blood tests makes a real difference.

Black coffee isn't just a morning pick-me-up—it may be one of the simplest things you can do for your liver. Studies suggest that regular coffee drinkers have a lower risk of liver diseases, including fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. The antioxidants in coffee help reduce inflammation and may slow the buildup of fat and scar tissue in liver cells. Caffeine itself has been linked to lower levels of liver enzymes that indicate damage or stress. Drinking it black—without sugar or cream—keeps the benefits intact without adding empty calories or negating coffee's natural compounds. Of course, moderation matters, but for most healthy adults, a few cups a day could be a small habit with a big payoff for liver health.

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is a condition characterized by deficiency of exocrine pancreatic enzymes, resulting in the inability to digest food properly, or maldigestion.

Signs of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency

Major symptoms of EPI include steatorrhea (oily stool) and weight loss. Although steatorrhea is the most common symptomatic complaint, sometimes the stool can be watery, reflecting the osmotic load received by the intestine.
