Think of it like a building: you cannot have a sturdy roof (academic learning) if the foundation (sensory systems) is shaky.
Level 1: The Foundation (Sensory Systems)
Everything starts at the bottom. Before a child can even sit still in a chair, their nervous system must process information from these systems:
Tactile: Touch (texture, temperature, pain).
Vestibular: Balance and movement (located in the inner ear).
Proprioception: Body awareness (sensory input from muscles and joints).
Olfactory & Gustatory: Smell and taste.

In many cases, a child with ASD might not "tell" you they need to go. Instead, you may need to rely on behavioral cues, such as retreating to a specific corner or tugging at their clothes.
