🔰ARTIFICIAL RETINA
Researchers have developed a new artificial retina that may restore vision in people whose light sensing cells have been damaged by diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. Instead of repairing the lost cells, the implant converts incoming light into tiny electrical signals that directly stimulate healthy retinal nerve cells still connected to the brain.
In animal studies, the device restored visual responses in blind mice and also allowed macaque monkeys to detect near infrared light, a type of light that is normally invisible to the human eye.
The implant is made from an ultrathin network of tellurium nanowires that efficiently converts both visible and near infrared light into electrical signals. Unlike many earlier retinal implants, it does not require an external power source and is designed to integrate closely with the retina, reducing interference while producing more natural visual information.
This could improve both vision restoration and image quality.
