Rohan is 24 and works in Hinjawadi. He had fever for three days. On the third day it came down on its own, and the whole house relaxed.
He took a Crocin, felt lighter, and went back to office.
Nobody had told him the one thing that matters most in dengue. The real danger does not come during the fever. It comes in the day or two after the fever settles.
That same evening his platelet count was already falling.
Six dengue warning signs that mean you go to a hospital immediately:
One. Severe stomach pain or tenderness in the abdomen.
Two. Repeated vomiting, or not being able to keep fluids down.
Three. Bleeding from anywhere, including the nose, or black stools.
Four. Sudden extreme tiredness or restlessness. Most people write this off as ordinary weakness after fever.
Five. Cold, clammy hands and feet, or passing very little urine.
Six. Fever coming down but the person feeling worse instead of better.
Why the timing matters. In dengue, the critical phase usually begins around the third to fifth day, often just as the fever settles. Platelets can fall during this window, so this is exactly when monitoring is needed rather than relaxed.
What to do meanwhile. Keep fluids going, take paracetamol only, and rest. Avoid painkillers like ibuprofen, diclofenac or aspirin unless a doctor has prescribed them, as they can increase bleeding risk.
A CBC and an NS1 or dengue antibody test give a clear picture. Repeat CBCs are often needed, because one normal report early on does not rule out a fall later.
Save this. If someone at home has fever, this is the part everyone gets wrong.
