Highest Level Of Dhikr

Ibraheem Bin Adham [D.162 A.H.] said:

«أعلى الدرجات: أن يكون ذكر الله عندك أحلى من العسل، وأشهى من الماء العذب الصافي عند العطشان في اليوم الصائف.»

❝The highest levels are when the Dhikr of Allaah to you is sweeter than honey, and is more desirable than fresh pure water to a thirsty person on a summers day.❞

[Majmoo Rasail Ibn Rajab, (3/317) | Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya Miraath Al-Anbiyya]

Abu Dharr reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, instruct me.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “I advise you to be mindful of Allah Almighty, for it will beautify all of your affairs.” I said, “Tell me more.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “You must recite the Quran and remember Allah Almighty, for you will be mentioned in heaven and you will have light upon earth.” I said, “Tell me more.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “You must observe long periods of silence, for it will drive away Satan and help you in the matter of your religion.” I said, “Tell me more.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Beware of too much laughter, for it will deaden the heart and take away the light on your face.” I said, “Tell me more.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not fear the blame of any critic in the matter of Allah.”

Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah(رحمه الله) on Love:

Love is a psychological sickness, and if it grows strong it affects the body, and becomes a physical sickness, either as diseases of the brain, which are said to be diseases caused by waswaas, or diseases of the body such as weakness, emaciation and so on. [Majmoo’ al-Fataawa 10/129]

Loving a non-mahram woman leads to many negative consequences, the full extent of which is known only to the Lord of people. It is a sickness that affects the religious commitment of the sufferer, then it may also affect his mind and body. [Majmoo’ al-Fataawa 10/132]

If the heart loves Allaah alone and is sincerely devoted to Him, it will not even think of loving anyone else in the first place, let alone falling in love. When a heart falls in love, that is due to the lack of love for Allaah alone. Hence because Yoosuf loved Allaah and was sincerely devoted to Him, he did not fall into the trap of love, rather Allaah says

“Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual in*******se. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, (guided) slaves”
[Yoosuf 12:24]

As for the wife of al-‘Azeez, she was a mushrik as were her people, hence she fell into this trap. Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (10/135)

If a man is in love with a woman, even if she is permissible for him, his heart remains enslaved to her, and she can control him as she wishes, even though outwardly he appears to be her master, because he is her husband; but in fact he is her prisoner and slave, especially if she is aware of his need and love for her. In that case, she will control him like a harsh and oppressive master controls his abject slave who cannot free himself from him. Rather he is worse off than that, because enslavement of the heart is worse than enslavement of the body. [Majmoo’ al-Fataawa 10/185]

If he is tested with love but he remains chaste and is patient, then he will be rewarded for fearing Allaah. It is known from shar’i evidence that if a person remains chaste and avoids haraam things in looking, word and deeds, and he keeps quiet about it and does not speak of it, so that there will be haraam talk about that, whether by complaining to another person or committing evil openly, or pursuing the beloved one in any way, and he is patient in obeying Allaah and avoiding sin, despite the pain of love that he feels in his heart, just as one who is afflicted with a calamity bears the pain of it with patience, then he will be one of those who fear Allaah and are patient,

“Verily, he who fears Allaah with obedience to Him (by abstaining from sins and evil deeds, and by performing righteous good deeds), and is patient, then surely, Allaah makes not the reward of the Muhsinoon (good‑doers) to be lost” [Yoosuf 12:90].

[Majmoo’ al-Fataawa 10/133]

Imam Ibn Taymeeyah رحمه الله said:

“Sufyaan Bin 'Uayaynah was asked about feeling sadness for an unknown reason.

He said: 'It is a sin which you desired to do secretly but you did not perform it, so you were rewarded with sadness for it.'

Therefore, sins have a penalty, secret sins are sanctioned secretly and public sins are sanctioned publicly.”

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله)

"Man taught his dog how to catch prey for him and the dog overcame his desire to eat the prey out of respect for his owner and fear of his power, and Allâh ﷻ taught you and you do not accept His teaching."

The Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

“A man’s status will be raised in Paradise and he will ask, ‘Where did this come from?’ It will be said [to him], ‘From your son’s supplications for [seeking] forgiveness for you.’”

At-Tazkīyyah in Islām is one of the utmost important spiritual aspects of Islām.

What is Tazkīyyah An-Nafs?

Tazkīyyah: Literally means something that increases and to be pure.

Tazkīyyah An-Nafs: Tazkīyyah as it relates to worshippers, means the soul’s purification from sin & all evil diseases of the heart.

Types of Hearts

There are three main types of hearts:

1 - A Sound & Healthy Heart:

A sound and healthy heart is what which is attached to Allāh alone. A person who possesses this heart will do anything for the sake of Allāh alone. A person with true and a sincere heart will:
• Forgive people for the sake of Allāh.
• Control anger and desires for the sake of Allāh.
• Get involved in healthy discussions for the sake of Allāh.
• Be humble and kind with his parents, spouse, children for the sake of Allāh.
• And all other praiseworthy traits.

2 - A Dead Heart:

A dead heart is the opposite of a healthy heart. It does everything to please itself. It is slave of its own desires. If money is what a person with a dead heart desires, then he becomes a slave of money. He does everything and anything for the sake of earning money irrespective of whether it is earned in a ḥalāl or ḥarām way.

3 - A Sick Heart:

A sick heart swings between a healthy and a dead heart. This person has love for Allāh, faith in his heart, sincerity towards his duties but at the same time, also loves his desires and prefers them.

See Lagāthatul Lahfān Fī Maṣāyid Ash-Shayṭān by Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim (d. 751H) رحمه الله for more information.

Supplications to memorise:

اللهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنْ كُلِّ خُلُقٍ لا يُرْضِيْكَ

“O Allāh, purify my heart from every characteristic that is not pleasing to You”

اللهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنَ الغِلِّ والحِقْدِ والحَسَدِ والكِبْرِ
“O Allāh, purify my heart from hatred, resentment, jealousy, and arrogance.”
