You can't digest fibre. That's the whole point of it.

Your body has no enzyme that can break down most plant fibre. It isn't food for you. It's food for the bacteria in your gut, and they carry thousands of the enzymes you lack. What they make from it feeds your gut lining and sends signals around your body.

The tip: eat a wide variety of plants, and add fibre gradually.

PM2.5 is the name for tiny particles in polluted air, 2.5 micrometres or smaller. A human hair is about 30 times wider than the largest of them.

Bigger dust mostly gets caught in your nose and throat. Fine dust can travel to the deepest, smallest air sacs of the lungs.

There it can inflame the lungs. That inflammation, and the smallest particles that cross into the blood, can make blood clot more easily and blood vessels tighten. The World Health Organization's fact sheet on outdoor air names heart disease and stroke as the leading causes of early death from air pollution.

So bad-air days aren't only about coughs and itchy eyes. They are about your heart too.

Coming up before Diwali: simple ways to protect your home.

Happy Dussehra from all of us at SOMA.

In the story, it ends with one arrow. Health rarely works that way. It is won by small things done every day: a walk, a proper night's sleep, a plate with more colour on it.

May this Dussehra bring you victory in the small things, and the big ones.

Blood pressure creeping up. Blood sugar drifting. Sleep that no longer refreshes. A waist that grew with no change in habits.

Four doctors, four diagnoses, and rarely one on its own. One model links them through four processes, each pushing the next, round in a loop.

That's why fixing one number alone rarely moves the rest, and why habits that touch several at once tend to do more: sleep, strength training, and what and when you eat.

In many Indian cities, the air often gets worse from October to February. Pollution can rise even when we make no more smoke, because the weather stops clearing it.

On a warm day, air near the ground heats up and rises. It carries smoke and dust up and away.

On cool, calm nights the ground cools fast, and so does the air just above it. Warmer air higher up then works like a lid. Smoke and dust from traffic, building work and burning stay down where we breathe.

After the monsoon, rain washes the air less often. Winds drop. In the north, crop burning adds more. Even coastal Mumbai had only seven 'good' air days across the last five winters (October to February, government data).

Over the next few weeks we'll share what this air does inside the body, and simple ways to protect your home.

Start today: check your area's air quality number (AQI) each morning. It takes ten seconds.

What builds up in your body is simple arithmetic: what comes in, minus what goes out, over time.

For many everyday pollutants, indoor air is the biggest way in: cooking fumes, smoke and damp.

Your liver processes it, and your kidneys, gut and lungs clear it out. So the cheapest step works on the biggest way in: an extractor fan or an open window while cooking.

Your blood holds only about a teaspoon of sugar at a time. So where does a meal's sugar go?

Much of it goes into your muscles, to be stored or burned as fuel. The liver, gut and brain take their shares too.

Two people can weigh the same and differ by eight kilograms of muscle. The one with less muscle has less room, so blood sugar stays high for longer.

And working muscle pulls sugar in by itself, without needing insulin. That's why strength training helps blood sugar.

Awake at seven, but only working properly by eleven?

Cortisol surges 30 to 45 minutes after you wake. It's the body getting ready for the day, and it's separate from your daily total.

The system works like a thermostat: cortisol travels back to the brain and turns its own supply down. Long-term stress can flatten that morning surge. The glands aren't empty; the controls have shifted.

The best place to start: wake up at the same time every day, and get bright light in the first hour.
