You’re halfway through telling someone what happened, and they’ve already decided what you should do about it.

Familiar? Now for the slightly uncomfortable question: how often have we been that person? 😅

It’s easy to offer advice when we care. We hear a problem, remember a similar experience and jump in with what worked for us. But the person speaking may still be trying to find the words for how they feel.

Let them finish. Be curious. Give them a little room before filling it with your own experience.

And if you have something you think could help, a simple “Would you like a suggestion?” gives them a choice.

When you’re sharing something difficult, what makes you feel truly heard?

Someone starts telling us about a difficult day, and our mind immediately gets to work: “Here’s what you should do. Here’s what I would do. Have you tried this?”

It often comes from a caring place. We want to help, fix things, make it better. But in our hurry to offer a solution, we can miss what the person needs from us in that moment.

Maybe they’re still trying to make sense of what happened. Maybe they need to say it out loud. Maybe they just want someone to acknowledge, “That sounds really hard.”

Give them room to finish. Pay attention to their pauses. And if you’re unsure, ask: “Would you like my thoughts, or would you like me to just listen?”

Think about the last time you were upset. Did you want advice—or someone who would let you talk?

Have you ever spent just ten minutes with someone, then spent the next three hours replaying what they said?

The conversation is over, but it still has your attention. Meanwhile, the meal in front of you, the person beside you, or the little moment you could have enjoyed barely registers.

It’s worth noticing what continues to occupy your mind—and whether you want to keep giving it so much room.

Bring your attention back gently. To the conversation you want to be part of. To something you love doing. To the life happening around you right now.

What’s been getting more of your attention than it deserves?

It’s easy to say “protect your energy” when you can choose who you spend time with. But what happens when the person draining you is your boss, your colleague, or someone you have to interact with every day?

You may not have the option to walk away. But you can practise staying involved in the work without getting involved in every complaint, conflict or negative conversation.

Be polite. Be professional. Bring the conversation back to what can actually be done. And remind yourself that someone else’s mood doesn’t have to become the mood of your entire day.

Your attention is valuable. Notice where you’re spending it—and how much of the conversation you’re still carrying long after it’s over.

Have you found a way to handle this at work? What helps you?

“I’m fine” can sometimes hold a whole conversation beneath it. 🤍

A pause. A change in tone. A smile that feels a little forced. Words don’t always carry everything a person is feeling.

Listening means being present enough to notice—and gentle enough to ask, rather than assume.

“You seem a little quiet. Would you like to talk?”

We may not always know what someone needs, but we can give them the space to tell us, in their own time.

What makes you feel truly heard by someone?

Three little words can open a conversation: “Tell me more.” ✨

It’s easy to listen just long enough to recognise something familiar—and then fill in the rest ourselves.

But a little curiosity can help us hear what we might otherwise miss.

“What do you mean?”
“How did that feel for you?”
“Has something changed?”

We don’t have to let go of everything we know. We can simply leave space for something we haven’t understood yet.

Try “Tell me more” in a conversation today. What might you discover if you let the other person finish their story?

Are you listening to understand—or already preparing your reply? 💭

Sometimes, we enter a conversation so sure of what we know that we leave little room for what someone else can teach us.

Listening with a willingness to learn means pausing our assumptions, asking questions and allowing a different perspective to reach us.

Every conversation doesn’t have to change your mind. But giving it the chance to expand your understanding is a beautiful place to begin. 🌱

Who in your life has taught you something simply because you took the time to listen?

Are we seeing the person in front of us—or the version of them we remember? 💭

One old disagreement, one mistake, one familiar pattern… and we can start believing we already know what someone will say or do.

Our past experiences matter. But they may not tell us the whole story of who someone is today.

We want room to grow, change and be understood afresh. Can we leave that same room for others?

Before your next “They always…”, pause and ask: “Is that what’s happening now?”

Have you ever felt someone was holding you to an older version of yourself?

When was the last time you felt comfortable saying, “I don’t know”? 🌱
We often feel we should have the answers—to life, to relationships, even to what someone else is thinking.
But there’s freedom in accepting that our understanding is still unfolding. We can ask another question, hear a different perspective, or reconsider something we once felt certain about.
You can trust your experience and still leave room to be surprised.
What has life taught you recently that you didn’t expect? 💭

05/10/2026

Can “I know” sometimes get in the way of what we could learn? 🌱

Experience gives us confidence. But when we stop asking questions, we may miss something new—even in the people and situations we know best.

Our children grow. Our relationships evolve. And we change, too. What helped us once may need a little rethinking today.

There’s strength in being able to say, “This is what I know so far… but I’m willing to learn.”

When was the last time you changed your mind about something you thought you knew?
