The point of connection.
We met whilst calling out our own and each other’s bu****it in a field in Yorkshire (actually this was the Hoffman Process but dress it up as you like), it changed both our lives, and the rest.
A friendship built on true honesty, one I found at the precise moment of finding myself. We both had lived a lot, learnt, earned and gained and as life goes, lost.
We both recognised immediately the intensity and sensitivity in the other, ‘like two alligators locking eyes across mossy waters,’ I said.
‘I prefer a kindred spirit analogy, darling,’ he said.
We laughed, immediate friends. Lost, vulnerable, beating the s**t out of the boxing pads.
See, friendship is like that, human beings are like that. We notice the spark, the aliveness in each other. We clock eyes at our softest or roughest and we know, ‘human, I choose you human.’
In the images we’re celebrating two years of my sobriety, in London, he arriving by private jet and me by donkey, somewhere fancy.
I ordered the lobster just to watch the bravado in him fighting with it for me and to get him back for the jet, that’s the alligator see.
He humoured me and we laughed, a lot, despite the burn on his fingers and my accidentally flashing him when I dropped my napkin.
We talked til 4am. The need to be playful, creative, the capacity for fun overtaking the clock. In London as in life, we grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
I have been encouraging this a lot recently; going for it. Connection, bravery, progress. Calling bu****it left, right and centre through my coaching practice to find fresh and surprising sparks of humanness.
There are challenges, absolutely. There is also a lot to be gained. Moving together in the right direction, the sparks that fly when a client ultimately, finally chooses themselves, ‘I choose you human, I choose ME.’
