How to Become the Retailer’s First Choice
——————————————————-
🏆 Pharma Chanakya – Field Force Success Series
Day 47 — How to Become the Retailer’s First Choice
🟠 Part 2: Retailer Strategy
In pharmaceutical marketing, a retailer is not merely a point of sale. A retailer is a critical business partner who influences product movement, availability, substitution, repeat demand, and the overall strength of your brand in the market.
Every territory has many medical representatives, many companies, and hundreds of products. The real question is:
“When the retailer has limited shelf space, limited working capital, and multiple companies competing for attention, why should your product and your company become his first choice?”
The answer is not simply a higher margin.
The retailer’s first choice is the representative who creates the most value and the least difficulty.
⸻
🌟 1. Understand the Retailer Before Selling to Him
Do not enter a retail shop with only one objective: “I have to book an order.”
First understand the retailer.
Know:
* Which products are moving fastest?
* Which brands are frequently demanded?
* Which products have slow movement?
* What problems does the retailer face?
* How frequently does he need replenishment?
* Which products are regularly out of stock?
* What kind of service does he expect from suppliers?
* Does he need faster delivery, better availability, or better communication?
A representative who understands the retailer’s business becomes more valuable than one who simply presents products.
Know the retailer’s business, and you will know how to serve him better.
⸻
🤝 2. Build a Relationship, Not Just an Order
An order may give you today’s business.
A relationship can give you years of business.
Do not visit a retailer only when you need an order.
Visit consistently.
Ask about his business.
Listen to his concerns.
Follow up on commitments.
Remember important details.
And most importantly, never make a promise that you cannot fulfill.
Trust is built through repeated small actions.
Consistency creates credibility.
⸻
📦 3. Availability Is One of Your Biggest Advantages
A retailer cannot sell what he does not have.
Even if your product is excellent, poor availability can weaken its market performance.
Therefore, the field force must pay attention to:
Right Product + Right Quantity + Right Time + Right Service
If a retailer repeatedly experiences stock-outs, he will naturally start looking for alternatives.
Your responsibility is to coordinate with the distributor/stockist and ensure that important products remain available.
“Available when needed” is a powerful reason to become the retailer’s preferred company.
⸻
💰 4. Give Value—Not Just Discounts
Price and margin matter in business, but they are not the only factors.
A retailer also values:
* Fast service
* Reliable supply
* Clear schemes
* Genuine products
* Accurate billing
* Quick resolution of problems
* Professional behaviour
* Consistent follow-up
Do not train the retailer to think only about “How much margin are you giving?”
Train him to recognize the total value of doing business with you.
⸻
📊 5. Help the Retailer Improve His Business
The strongest field representatives think beyond their own products.
Suppose a retailer has a product that is moving slowly.
Instead of simply pushing more stock, understand why.
Is there insufficient doctor demand?
Is the product not available in the right quantity?
Is the retailer carrying too many competing brands?
Is the product being prescribed but not stocked?
Your role is to identify the gap and help create a solution.
When you help the retailer earn, you become part of his success.
And people naturally prefer business partners who contribute to their success.
⸻
🧠 6. Become a Problem Solver
Every retailer has problems.
Delivery problems.
Stock problems.
Expiry concerns.
Billing issues.
Credit-related issues.
Communication gaps.
Market competition.
Product availability problems.
A field representative who says:
“That is not my problem.”
creates distance.
A representative who says:
“Let me see how I can help.”
creates trust.
You may not be able to solve every problem immediately, but your attitude toward the problem makes a major difference.
⸻
📞 7. Follow-Up Is Where Professionals Win
Many representatives make promises during the visit:
“I will check.”
“I will arrange it.”
“I will speak to the distributor.”
“I will get back to you.”
But the real test comes afterward.
Did you actually follow up?
If you promised something today, remember it tomorrow.
If the issue is still unresolved, update the retailer.
Never make the retailer chase you for information.
A promise followed by action creates trust.
⸻
🌱 8. Do Not Overload the Retailer
A common mistake in pharmaceutical marketing is excessive product pushing.
Every visit does not need to become:
“Sir, take this product.”
“Sir, take this quantity.”
“Sir, this scheme is running.”
Instead, make your visit useful.
Discuss relevant products.
Discuss movement.
Discuss availability.
Discuss genuine market requirements.
A retailer should feel:
“When this person visits me, I gain something useful.”
That is how a sales call becomes a business relationship.
⸻
👂 9. Listen More Than You Speak
One of the most underrated skills in sales is listening.
Ask:
“Sir, which products are moving well?”
“Which products are giving you difficulty?”
“Are you facing any supply issue?”
“Is there anything we can improve from our side?”
Then listen carefully.
Do not interrupt.
Do not immediately defend your company.
Do not turn every complaint into an argument.
Sometimes the retailer is not asking for a solution immediately.
He simply wants someone to understand the problem.
⸻
🏆 10. Be the Most Reliable Person in the Market
You don’t necessarily have to be the most talkative representative.
You don’t have to be the person offering the biggest scheme.
You need to become the person whom the retailer can trust.
If you say you will visit on Monday—visit on Monday.
If you say you will check stock—check stock.
If you commit to a follow-up—complete it.
If you make a mistake—accept it and correct it.
Reliability creates preference.
⸻
🚫 11. Never Criticize Competitors Unprofessionally
Talking negatively about competitors may provide temporary satisfaction, but it rarely creates long-term respect.
Instead of saying:
❌ “Their company is bad.”
Say:
✅ “Let me explain what makes our product/service different.”
Focus on your own strengths.
Your professionalism is part of your brand.
⸻
🏪 12. Respect the Retailer’s Time
A busy retailer may have customers waiting, staff to manage, stock to check, suppliers calling, and accounts to handle.
Therefore:
Be brief. Be relevant. Be useful.
A good sales call is not necessarily a long sales call.
The objective is not to occupy the retailer’s time.
The objective is to create value within the retailer’s time.
⸻
📈 13. Track Retailer Preferences
Professional field force members maintain useful market intelligence.
Know:
* Fast-moving products
* Slow-moving products
* Stock levels
* Reorder patterns
* Product preferences
* Customer demand
* Competitor activity
* Seasonal demand
* Retailer concerns
This information helps you plan your territory better.
Information gives you an advantage that enthusiasm alone cannot provide.
⸻
🤝 14. Coordinate With Distributor and Stockist
The retailer experiences your entire supply chain through you.
If the distributor has stock but the retailer cannot get it on time, the problem becomes your problem in the retailer’s eyes.
Therefore, maintain strong coordination with:
Company → Distributor → Stockist → Retailer
Everyone must work as one team.
A strong supply chain creates a strong retail relationship.
⸻
❤️ 15. Treat Every Retailer With Respect
Whether the retailer gives you a large order or a small order, professionalism should remain the same.
Do not change your behaviour based only on business volume.
Today’s small retailer may become tomorrow’s major business partner.
More importantly—
Respect is not a sales technique. It is professional character.
⸻
🔥 The Retailer First-Choice Formula
Remember this simple formula:
FIRST CHOICE =
Availability
* Reliability
* Service
* Professionalism
* Relationship
* Problem Solving
* Consistent Follow-Up
Not merely:
Margin + Scheme + Order
⸻
🎯 Your Day 47 Action Plan
Today, select your Top 10 retailers.
For each retailer, write down:
1. What are his top-selling products?
2. What is his biggest business problem?
3. Which of your products have the best potential?
4. What service improvement can you provide?
5. What commitment will you make?
6. When will you follow up?
Then make every visit with one objective:
“I will create value for this retailer today.”
⸻
🏆 Final Mantra
“Do not try to become the retailer’s biggest supplier.
Become his most reliable business partner.”
Because when a retailer trusts you, values your service, receives timely supply, and sees you as someone who helps his business grow—
You don’t have to ask to become his first choice.
Your performance makes you the first choice.
