Candida auris (a superbug fungus) is considered a major threat to public health because it is resistant to antifungal drugs and survives for long periods on surfaces. It is difficult to detect with standard laboratory methods, may be misidentified (causing improper treatment), and has caused outbreaks in healthcare settings. People with compromised immune systems are most susceptible to infection.

A recent study compared four different Thymus species essential oils for their efficacy in inhibiting Candida auris. What the researchers found was that Thymus vulgaris was the strongest antifungal followed by Thymus zygis (both with thymol as the main constituent, but the T. zygis had near equal carvacrol content). The conclusion of the study was that both these thyme oils are "a great contribution to the treatment of C. auris infections, being promising alternatives to conventional therapy."
