Why I believe in referrals

There’s a misconception that aesthetic doctors don’t refer patients because they’re worried about losing business.

For me, it’s actually the opposite.

I know what I’m good at, and importantly, I also know what I’m not. I’ve built a network of doctors and specialists I genuinely trust. These are colleagues who have expertise in areas that go beyond my own.

If someone can achieve a better outcome for my patient than I can, why wouldn’t I refer them?

To me, being able to say “this isn’t my area of expertise, but I know exactly who I’d trust with you” is a sign of good medicine, not lost business.

Ultimately, my responsibility is to make sure my patients receive the right treatment from the right person, even when that person isn’t me.

That’s how you build trust, respect and long-term relationships with your patients.

A special moment this weekend as we gathered in Dublin for the Irish College of Aesthetic Medicine National Conference, where I was very proud to hand over the presidency to my colleague, Dr Caitriona Kieran Dr Caitriona Kieran BA BDentSc MFDS MSc Aesthetic Med PGDipDerm .

Looking back on the past two years, I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together. We’ve made significant progress in our engagement with Government and are now many steps closer to meaningful legal reform for aesthetic medicine in Ireland.

I’m also particularly proud of the educational events we’ve developed for our colleagues, and, most importantly, our continued work to raise clinical standards and ensure that patients across Ireland can expect a basic standard of quality and safety when seeking aesthetic medical treatments.

Although I’m stepping down as President, I’ll remain on the College Board for another year, with a continued focus on education. I’m also looking forward to having a little more time to devote to my clinical work and, most importantly, to my patients.

It has been a privilege to serve as President. Thank you to everyone who has supported, contributed to and shared this journey with me and I wish Dr Kieran every success in the year ahead. 🥂

✨ EVIDENCE MATTERS IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE ✨

In aesthetics, we’re surrounded by information, but not all information is created equal.

A viral TikTok. A polished Instagram reel. A before-and-after photo. A personal testimonial.

They can all be interesting… but they aren’t the same as evidence.

When we’re making decisions about your skin, injectables or aesthetic treatments, we believe in looking beyond trends and asking:

📚 How strong is the evidence?
⚖️ What are the benefits, risks and limitations?
👩‍⚕️ And most importantly — is it appropriate for you?
