Supernumerary phantom limbs in a patient with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and rehabilitation challenges: A case report

This case report described a 61-year-old woman with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder who developed supernumerary phantom limbs, the illusory perception of extra limbs, during inpatient rehabilitation, a rare association not previously well documented in this condition. Despite persistent phantom sensations, multimodal rehabilitation combining medication, sensory stimulation, and task-specific training achieved meaningful gains in upper limb function and daily activities.

ISPRM Strengthens Global Collaboration in Neurorehabilitation at WCNR 2026, South Korea!

Our Treasurer and PC member, Professor Manoj Sivan, represented ISPRM at the international roundtable discussion during the World Congress for Neurorehabilitation (WCNR 2026) in Daegu, South Korea.

The roundtable brought together representatives of international rehabilitation societies for fruitful discussions on strengthening global collaboration and advancing the field of neurorehabilitation through inclusive, multidisciplinary working.

Representing the global community of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) physicians, Professor Sivan reaffirmed ISPRM's commitment to working collaboratively with all rehabilitation disciplines to deliver high-quality, person-centred care and improve outcomes for people living with neurological conditions.

Professor Sivan also participated in the World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA) session, expressing ISPRM's continued commitment to working alongside WRA member organisations to advance the WHO Rehabilitation 2030 vision and improve global access to rehabilitation services.

It was particularly encouraging to see Professor Nam-Jong Paik, a fellow PRM physician, take on the presidency of the World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation (WFNR), bringing a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between WFNR and ISPRM.

Together, through strong medical leadership, multidisciplinary partnerships and international collaboration, we can advance rehabilitation globally and ensure that everyone who needs rehabilitation has access to high-quality care.

Last week, ISPRM Vice-President Prof. Vu Nguyen attended A***R 2026, the congress of the Latin American Medical Association of Rehabilitation, in the Dominican Republic.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with presidents and leaders of national Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) societies from across the region. PRM is strong in the Americas and the Caribbean, and ISPRM is proud to work alongside these colleagues.

A special thank you to Prof. Mariel Alberto and Prof. Francisco de la Rosa for hosting such a great meeting.

Association between hormone replacement therapy and clinical outcomes in women with rotator cuff tears

A five-year cohort study of women with rotator cuff tears found no significant overall differences in clinical outcomes between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) users and non-users, although HRT users showed distinct early recovery trends and significantly greater odds of moderate-to-severe muscle atrophy on imaging. The findings suggest hormonal status may selectively influence musculoskeletal recovery around the menopause transition, warranting further study.
