The average marathon is about 40 minutes slower than it was in 1986. That’s actually a good sign.

“As you know, Coach Antonio got me through my first marathon in NYC last year on just 7 months of training. It was a great experience, though I definitely struggled on the back half.

This year I ran my second marathon, the W**eglass, three days after my 50th birthday, and it couldn’t have gone better. After a year and a half of training with Antonio, I felt in control the entire race. We set a race strategy together and hoped I’d break 4 hours. I came in at 3:46, a PR by over 30 minutes (ran 4:17 at NYC last year in my 1st marathon).

On the drive down I put on the MTA podcast “Trust Your Training, Go the Distance,” and the timing was perfect. My long runs 3 to 6 weeks out had felt strong, but like most marathoners I hadn’t gone long in a few weeks, so I was trying to remember how those runs felt. As the podcast mentioned, training usually tops out at 20 to 21 miles, and I’d only run 26.2 once before. I felt stronger this year, but in the days leading up to the race some doubts started creeping in. I didn’t know how it would go past mile 20, whether I could finish strong, or if I’d actually break 4 hours. The podcast gave me the confidence I needed. I executed our plan, stayed controlled through the first half, then ran big negative splits on the back half once I felt good enough to push and stayed consistent pushing right through the finish!

Huge thanks to MTA and Coach Antonio. Less than 18 months ago I signed up for my first marathon, and yesterday, three days after turning 50, I ran a 3:46. It definitely wouldn’t have been possible without Coach Antonio & MTA!!

Now it’s time to plan ahead for next year’s marathon!” -Jason

Confidence on race day isn’t a feeling. It’s a training log. Look back at the work. Then take the leap. 🏃

Confidence comes from evidence.

Sebastian Sawe and his coach used this maxim from the book ‘The Way of Excellence’ by Brad Stulberg

46% of everyday runners got injured in one year, and only one thing predicted it.

Which injury keeps coming back for you?

Congrats to our client Ami on finishing the Berlin Marathon last weekend! She writes,

“I want to give a huge shout out to MTA Coach Cindy. She trained me for the Berlin Marathon when I was battling various injuries and muscle imbalances.

As a Masters category runner, I was anxious as to whether I would be ready and able to run strong on the course, but Coach Cindy was practical, positive, and helped me feel excited and assured for race day. We discussed multiple strategies that made my training runs easier and gave me the confidence for Berlin.

I ended up finishing 15 min faster than London as a result, just as she predicted. Thank you, Coach Cindy, for all you did to get me here!”
