5 Causes of Heel Pain
1. Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the thick band of tissue (fascia) that connects the heel bone to the toes. This is often the most common cause.
2. Achilles Tendonitis: Inflammation of the large tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, often from overuse.
3. Heel Spurs: Bony growths on the underside of the heel bone, which can be caused by long-term muscle and ligament strain.
4. Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints, in the back of the heel.
5. Stress Fractures: Small cracks in the heel bone that can develop from repetitive stress or overuse.
Prevention of Heel Pain
1. Wear Proper Shoes: Choose well-fitting shoes with good arch support and cushioning, especially for exercise and long periods of walking.
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Reducing excess weight can decrease the pressure on your feet.
Stretch Regularly: Stretch your calf muscles, Achilles tendons, and plantar fascia, especially before physical activity.
3. Avoid Sudden Increases in Activity: Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your exercise routine.
4. Listen to Your Body: If you feel pain in your heel, rest and allow it to heal. Avoid pushed-through significant discomfort
