Every day, countless people live with mental health challenges. Some struggle in silence, burdened by stigma and discrimination. Others find strength in sharing their experiences, turning adversity into hope and inspiring change.

As Lesotho joins the world in commemorating World Mental Health Day 2026 under the theme, ā€œLived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,ā€ we recognize the courage and resilience of those who have navigated mental health challenges. Their voices are essential in shaping a more inclusive, compassionate, and responsive mental health system.

In this documentary, we hear directly from people with lived experience, their families, health workers, and advocates. Their stories challenge stigma, foster understanding, and remind us of the importance of creating a society where seeking help is encouraged, support is accessible, and every voice is heard and valued.

The Ministry of Health, with support from WHO, today commemorated World Mental Health Day and World Patient Safety Day, calling for stronger collaboration to improve mental health services and ensure safer, people-centred care for all.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Hon. Mamokete NtŔekhe emphasized the importance of dignity, inclusion, and listening to people with lived experience. She highlighted that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being and called for the elimination of stigma and discrimination that often prevent people from seeking support.

The Minister called for increased access to psychological support, safer working environments for health workers, and greater community awareness of mental health issues.

Addressing the gathering, WHO Public Health Officer Dr. Hailu Sirak noted that nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide live with a mental health condition, while close to 150 million people in Africa are affected by mental, neurological, or substance use disorders. He stressed that stigma, limited access to services, and inadequate investment in mental health continue to leave many without the care they need.

The commemoration concluded with a renewed call for sustained action from all stakeholders to promote mental health awareness, challenge stigma, strengthen patient safety, and build a more compassionate and inclusive society.

WHO remains committed to supporting the Government of Lesotho and all partners in advancing accessible, rights-based, and people-centred mental health care for all, including technical support for policy implementation.

People with an abnormal breast lump should seek medical care, even if the lump does not hurt.

Most breast lumps are not cancer.

Breast lumps that are cancerous are more likely to be successfully treated when they are small and have not spread to nearby lymph nodes.

This and every day, Africa is making progress towards a polio-free future!

šŸŒ From January to September 2026, 168M+ children were vaccinated, and polio detections in the region have declined by 33% since 2024. But rising detections of poliovirus types 1 and 3 remind us that the fight is not over.

Stronger surveillance, faster response and sustained commitment are essential to protecting every child.
