Midwives are often the professionals most present during labour and birth, yet many continue to face barriers to practising autonomously despite being trained, competent, and legally recognised to do so.

This analysis brings together evidence from qualitative studies exploring how midwives and nurse midwives experience autonomy within health facilities β€” including the gap between policy and everyday reality in maternity care settings. Experiences of professional recognition, decision-making, collaboration, and workplace culture are central to understanding how autonomy shapes care for labouring women worldwide.

🌍 Independent Midwives Association Lesotho-IMAL at the ICM 2026 Triennial Council Meeting | Lisbon, Portugal πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ή

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) 2026 Triennial Council Meeting has officially concluded after three productive days of dialogue, collaboration, governance, and strategic decision-making aimed at advancing the midwifery profession globally.

We are proud that the **Independent Midwives Association of Lesotho (IMAL)** was represented at this important global forum, contributing to discussions on the future of midwifery, strengthening Member Associations, reviewing key policy and position statements, electing a new ICM Board, and shaping the strategic direction of the profession for the coming years.

As IMAL, we remain committed to bringing global midwifery priorities, innovations, and advocacy efforts back home to strengthen maternal and newborn health services in Lesotho.

We extend our congratulations to the newly elected ICM Board and thank the outgoing Board for their dedicated service and leadership throughout the 2023–2026 triennium.

The conclusion of the Council Meeting marks the beginning of an exciting week as we now proceed to the 34th ICM Triennial Congress, where IMAL will continue to represent Lesotho and contribute to global conversations on midwifery, education, leadership, research, and quality maternal healthcare.

Together, we are advancing midwifery, strengthening associations, and improving the health of women, newborns, and families.

Join us for a landmark conversation bringing together, for the first time, the leaders of the world's five global professional associations representing midwives, obstetricians and gynaecologists, nurses, paediatricians and neonatal nurses.

Together, we will discuss how stronger collaboration across professions can help accelerate progress for maternal and newborn survival in low- and middle-income countries and launch a shared call to action for the future.
