Lithuania is not only a startup nation. It is a sailing nation too. ⛵🇱🇹

For the first time ever, Lithuania is hosting the ORC European Championship.

From 7–15 August, top offshore sailing crews from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Estonia and beyond will compete in Klaipėda for European titles. 🌊

Onshore, the Regatta Village at Klaipėda Cruise Ship Terminal will bring live music, local flavours and maritime experiences to the city.

For many crews, this will be their first visit to Lithuania.

A strong debut – and a chance to put Klaipėda firmly on Europe’s sailing map.

Fair winds and fierce racing! ⛵

6 unicorns in a country of just 2.9 million people? 🦄🇱🇹

Welcome to Lithuania!

In less than a decade, Lithuania has produced six billion-dollar technology companies:

✅ Vinted
✅ Nord Security
✅ Baltic Classifieds Group
✅ Flo Health
✅ Cast AI
✅ Oxylabs

The newest arrival, Oxylabs, has been valued at $3.6 billion – making it Lithuania’s second-most-valuable unicorn.

What is Lithuania’s formula?

A small domestic market that makes founders think globally from day one. Strong tech talent. A close-knit community. And successful entrepreneurs who put their capital, experience and connections back into the ecosystem.

Lithuanian startups do not build for Lithuania.

They build from Lithuania – for the world. 🚀🚀🚀

🚀 Lithuania is not only as agile as a startup. It is a true startup nation. 🇱🇹

📰 A new Computer Weekly feature explores how a country of just 2.8 million people has built one of Europe’s most dynamic technology ecosystems.

📈 Since 2020, the value of Lithuania’s tech sector has grown sixfold to €16.4 billion.

💻 More than 70,000 people work in ICT.

🦄 Six Lithuanian-founded companies have reached unicorn status.

But the real story is not only about numbers.

💡 Limited access to venture capital taught Lithuanian founders to bootstrap, use resources wisely and build for international markets from day one.

🔗 From Vinted and the “Vinted effect” to Nord Security, a thriving fintech sector and technology hubs such as Cyber City, Lithuania has turned constraints into a competitive advantage.

Lithuanian artist and composer Lina Lapelytė has transformed Tate Modern’s vast Turbine Hall into a living, ever-changing performance.

Her new participatory installation invites visitors to move through a maze, walk, stamp, jump and sing along with a specially created soundscape.

There is no fixed stage and no passive audience, every visitor becomes part of the artwork.

🎶 Each gesture, sound and movement contributes to a collective choreography created in real time. With every new group of participants, the work begins again in a completely different form.

🏆 Lapelytė, one of the creators of the Golden Lion-winning opera-performance Sun & Sea, continues to blur the boundaries between music, performance, visual art and everyday life.

🤖 Lithuania’s Team Android has conquered Portugal’s first official FIRST Tech Challenge tournament in Lisbon.

Represented by Dainius and Andrius Užusenis, the team faced 12 competitors from seven European countries, and won every single match.

Android secured the Winning Alliance title and took home the prestigious Control Award for its advanced autonomous programming, precise robot control and unique automatic targeting system.

⚡ The robot can launch three balls at the target in just half a second.

The Lisbon victory adds Portugal to Android’s growing list of international wins, following earlier triumphs in Lithuania and Poland.

And there is more: at the 2026 FTC World Championship in Houston, Android achieved the highest score ever recorded by a Lithuanian team in the country’s FTC history.

Lithuanian engineering talent, speed and strategy at their best. 🇱🇹

Our beloved President❤️!

Long before Valdas Adamkus became President of Lithuania, he spent nearly half his life in Chicago. Arriving in the United States as a refugee, he worked his way from a car-parts factory to leading the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes region.

🌊 In that role, he helped protect Lake Michigan and the wider Great Lakes - leaving a lasting mark on American public service and environmental policy.

Yet Lithuania was never far from his mind. After the country restored its independence, Adamkus returned home and served two terms as president, helping steer Lithuania towards membership of the European Union and NATO and strengthening its place within the democratic West.

💯 As he approaches his 100th birthday, the Chicago Sun-Times tells the remarkable story of a Lithuanian-American statesman whose life connects two countries, two traditions of public service and one enduring commitment to freedom.

🌍 A powerful reminder of what diaspora communities can contribute to their homelands, and to the world.

Former Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus spent half his life in Chicago and ran the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes regional office before going home to serve his country.

Film Studio in Vilnius? 🎬

Yes, and it could be a game changer for Lithuania’s creative economy.

Lithuania already has the talent, locations and international reputation. Now it is time to build the infrastructure to match.

The Ministry of the Economy and Innovation, Vilnius City Municipality, the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists and the Baltic Film & Creative Tech Cluster have joined forces to advance plans for a modern film studio in the capital.

Lithuania’s audiovisual sector reached a record €208 million in turnover in 2025 and has grown by an average of 19% a year since 2017.

The next scene? Making Vilnius a serious production hub for Europe. 🇱🇹✨

Lithuania welcomes its sixth unicorn. 🦄🇱🇹

Oxylabs has secured its first-ever external investment – $130 million from Warburg Pincus – valuing the Vilnius-born technology company at $3.6 billion.

That makes Oxylabs not only Lithuania’s newest unicorn, but also its second-most valuable.

What makes the story remarkable? Oxylabs spent more than a decade building a global data infrastructure business without external capital. Now, as reliable access to public web data becomes increasingly important for AI, the company is entering its next stage of growth.

Congratulations to the entire Oxylabs team!
