Melasma vs Hyperpigmentation, they’re not the same ✨
Hyperpigmentation is the umbrella term for any area of skin that becomes darker due to excess melanin.
Hyperpigmentation
→ Can be caused by acne, inflammation, sun exposure or injury
→ Often appears as individual dark spots or marks
→ Includes post-acne marks (PIH), sun spots & melasma
Melasma
→ A specific type of hyperpigmentation
→ Often appears as symmetrical brown/grey patches
→ Commonly affects the cheeks, forehead & upper lip
→ Frequently triggered by hormones, pregnancy, heat & UV exposure
→ Can be more persistent and prone to recurrence
So while melasma is hyperpigmentation, not all hyperpigmentation is melasma. 🤎
