“I don’t know why this cannula is blocked. I didn’t do anything.”

But sometimes, you actually did. You just didn’t realise it.

When you have a cannula in your hand, especially while you’re on admission or when you’re allowed to go home and return for your treatment, how you handle that hand matters.

That simple habit of bending the arm repeatedly, sleeping directly on the hand, pulling at the tape, carrying things with that hand or accidentally knocking the cannula can affect it.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Do:
• Keep the cannula and the dressing protected.
• Be mindful of the hand when sleeping or moving around.
• Keep the IV line from getting pulled or caught on things.
• Tell the nurse if the area becomes painful, swollen, red, wet or starts leaking.
• If you are going home with the cannula still in place, protect it and follow the instructions given to you by your healthcare team.

Don't:
• Keep bending the arm unnecessarily, especially if the cannula is around the elbow.
• Use the hand roughly or lift heavy things with it.
• Pull, twist or play with the cannula or tape.
• Sleep on the hand for long periods.
• Ignore pain or discomfort and wait until the next treatment before saying something.

And please, don't try to adjust, flush or remove the cannula yourself.

Sometimes, the cannula really is the problem. But sometimes, our everyday actions can contribute to the problem too.

If you have one in your hand right now, take a quick look at how you're treating that hand.

Your cannula needs your cooperation too.

The day before surgery is not the time to just pack your bag and wait.

Every surgery is different, so your surgeon or hospital may give you specific instructions based on your procedure, medications, health condition and type of anaesthesia. Those instructions should always come first.

That said, there are some common mistakes people make in the hours before surgery that can affect their procedure, and in some cases, lead to a delay or cancellation.

Here are 7 things to keep in mind:

1. Follow your fasting instructions.

Your hospital should tell you when to stop eating and drinking. Follow those instructions exactly. Don't assume that drinking water or having “just a little food” is okay unless your medical team says so.

2. Know what to do with your medications.

Some medications may need to be stopped, adjusted or taken at a specific time before surgery. Don't stop your regular medication or take an extra dose without speaking to your doctor or surgical team.

3. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Don't have alcohol or smoke because you think it won't make a difference. Both can affect your body's response to surgery and anaesthesia.

4. Tell your medical team if you become unwell.

Developed a fever? Cough? Cold? Infection? Or simply don't feel well? Let your surgical team know. They need to decide whether it is still safe for your surgery to go ahead.

5. Prepare everything you need.

Keep your hospital documents, identification, medication list, test results and anything else your hospital requested together. Leave unnecessary valuables at home.

6. Arrange transportation and support.

If you're having anaesthesia, don't plan to drive yourself home afterwards. Arrange transportation and, where required, someone who can stay with you after the procedure.

7. Follow your hospital's bathing and preparation instructions.

You may be asked to bathe in a particular way or remove things like makeup, nail polish, jewellery or piercings. Follow the instructions given to you.

And perhaps the most important one:

Don't guess when you're unsure.

If you don't know whether you should eat, drink, take a particular medication, or what to do because you're feeling unwell, contact your hospital or surgical team before your surgery. A little preparation can make a big difference.

Save this post and share it with someone preparing for surgery.

Please note: Pre-surgery instructions vary depending on the type of surgery, your health condition and the type of anaesthesia. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your doctor or hospital.

Is your HMO accepted at Virtual Hospital?

If you’ve ever wondered what “HMO” means or whether your health insurance can cover your treatment at Virtual Hospital, here’s a quick explanation.

HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization. In simple terms, an HMO helps people access healthcare services through a network of hospitals, clinics, doctors and other healthcare providers.

So, if you’re enrolled with an HMO, you may be able to receive certain healthcare services without paying the full cost yourself, depending on your health plan and what your plan covers.

At Virtual Hospital, we work with selected HMOs to make accessing quality healthcare more convenient for our patients.

Here are the HMOs we currently accept:

• AXA Mansard
• Leadway
• Reliance
• United Health
• NEM Health

Not sure whether your HMO is on the list or whether a particular service is covered under your plan?

Send us a message or contact our team to confirm before your visit.

Your healthcare plan should work for you, and we’re happy to help you understand your options.
