Working with our teacher trainees at the Rijksmuseum.
I don't like to use the word "magic" too often, but the experience of Alexander technique in front of art is, well, magic :-)

Posture-attention: thatโ€™s my own phrase that describes the intimate connection between posture and attention.

- Focusing on a screen? Your head automatically goes forward.

- Enjoying the trees and breeze during a walk in the woods? Your posture automatically opens up.

- Under a stressful deadline? Your shoulders and neck tightens.

In fact . . .

Trying to address posture without considering one's quality of attention leads to such superficial and short-lived results that it can hardly be considered a true investigation of postural states.

๐Ÿ”ธ And this is the reason most of us fail when we try to โ€œwork on our postureโ€.

Luckily, we can make some conscious choices about our quality of attention.

I've been mulling over this question for years:

How can I redefine posture in a way that encompasses the profound experiences of Alexander technique and is consistent with current science?

I came up with a two-part definition, one part describing a state of being and one part describing how we react (see previous post).

Here is the second part:
๐Ÿ”ธPosture is an immediate response to the environment in order to resist collapse and support action.

Think about a child slouching under the weight of a backpack, someone pulling forward towards a screen, someone tightening their shoulders listening to a political speech, or even a cat when it sees a mouse. These postural reactions precede movement.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You might think right now: what is your postural reaction to the screen you are reading this on? Is it necessary, or โ€œjustโ€ a habit.

What do you think?

Cambridge and Websters are wrong!

Posture is not:

the way in which someone usually holds their shoulders, neck, and back, or a particular position in which someone stands, sits, etc.
(Cambridge Dictionary online)

or

the position or bearing of the body whether characteristic or assumed for a special purpose
(Mirriam-Websters Dictionary online)

Sorry, but posture as position just doesn't capture the dynamic, responsive nature of posture, which is its most interesting and most important characteristic.

And, this definition totally ties people in knots when they try to โ€œput themselves in the right positionโ€.

See my substack article: is posture just a position?

"Fix me, teacher" vs. finding autonomy

In Alexander Technique, people often talk about the teacherโ€™s "magic touch."
And yes, there is a specific quality of touch and attention in AT that feels special. It isn't about manipulation or "fixing." That can feel a bit mysterious at first!

๐Ÿ”ธ But at Smartbody, we aim for something more sustainable: autonomy.
The real work happens when you begin to find balance on your own.
We help you to accurately perceive your body and the space around you, so that you can invite easy, more expansive movement and posture. We give you the tools to apply AT principles to everything you do, from running a marathon to sitting at your desk.

We think weโ€™re just sitting at a desk. In reality, we are moulding our emotional state into a shape defined by a computer screen. ๐Ÿ’ป

Most of us view posture as a simple position: get it "right" and the problem is solved.

But this hunched, hyper-focused attitude eventually infiltrates everything. We develop "lines of collapse" in the spine and persistent pockets of stiffness.

Worse, our larger patterns of behaviour begin to blend with our postural state, and we might lose our sense of calm, meaning, and connection to whatโ€™s around us.

๐Ÿ”ธ What if posture is a much larger concept than we think?

Iโ€™m writing a book on how 20 years of Alexander Technique practice can help you reclaim a better quality of attention and an expanded sense of spaciousness in life.
