A spinal cord injury can affect a person’s overall health in many different ways.

Beyond the loss of mobility, can cause blood pressure instability, loss of sensation, spasticity, and changes to other autonomic functions. These less visible complications can have a significant impact on a person’s independence and quality of life.

Listening to the SCI community about their day-to-day challenges and continuously deepening our understanding of how the spine works is at the core of our approach. It helps us advance therapies that make a meaningful difference for people living with spinal cord injury and other movement disabilities.

“Even if a 5 or 10% change seems small, what we see in practice is the difference in regaining autonomy or optimizing independence. What that often translates to is really meaningful, big changes for patients.”

Jenna Tosto Mancuso, Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Abilities Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, shares her perspective on neurorehabilitation technology and the difference it can make following a spinal cord injury.

We wholeheartedly share Jenna’s priority and philosophy for therapies designed to help people living with , such as our groundbreaking ARC-EX® System, the first US FDA-cleared technology indicated to improve hand strength and sensation after SCI.

“I think the measure of success is when a person is able to do the things that they want to do, outside of therapy, and when they make progress that’s meaningful to them.”

At the Abilities Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, physical therapist Jessica Polizzi, PT, DPT, NCS, is integrating innovative technologies, such as the ARC-EX® System, to support the rehabilitation of people living with spinal cord injuries. ARC-EX is the first US FDA-cleared technology indicated to improve hand strength and sensation after .

“What’s really exciting is that people come in who previously might have needed a caregiver’s support to be able to drink something,” says Jessica. “Now they’re coming back to me in the next session and saying, ‘I was able to eat a meal independently,’ or ‘I was able to consistently lift a water bottle to my mouth.’”

Today and every day, we are grateful to PTs helping people living with SCI achieve the goals that matter to them.

Learn about how Jessica supports the SCI community.

Just like every spinal cord injury is different, every person’s story is different.

People living with SCI face unique challenges that change how they navigate daily life. As Jessie Owen and Kenny Salvini discuss in the first episode of the Powering Through podcast, the most important thing we can do is show up and support each other after a traumatic moment.

From rehabilitation centers and hospitals to caregivers and family members and friends, this is the community that shows up every day. We are incredibly proud to serve and support this community. Every moment, every connection, and every conversation shared fuels our mission to help restore movement, function, and independence for people living with SCI.

We are grateful to Jessie, Kenny, and all the members of the community who share and trust us with their experience and time to help us make a meaningful difference in their lives.

We announced the first implant in the EIGER clinical feasibility study evaluating the safety and preliminary effectiveness of the investigational ARC-IM® System to restore mobility after both subacute and chronic spinal cord injury. EIGER is the first ONWARD mobility study to include individuals with subacute spinal cord injuries, defined as injuries sustained within 6 weeks of enrollment. Supported by a grant from Innosuisse, the study is being conducted in Switzerland at the Schweizer Paraplegiker-Stiftung in Nottwil and at the CHUV / Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois in Lausanne.

“The EIGER study is an important next step in our drive to restore mobility after spinal cord injury,” said Dave Marver, CEO of ONWARD Medical. "We intend for this study to inform the design of a pivotal study that will enable us to bring this important new therapy to market for the benefit of those with and other movement disabilities.”
