In Japanese tattooing, the tiger represents strength, courage, and protection. I wanted to capture its power and fierce character while keeping the design true to traditional Japanese tattooing.
Every design starts with a vision, shaped to flow naturally with the body.

Interested in this design or have an idea of your own? Feel free to send me a message — I'd love to hear from you! 🖤

Hey, I’m Pieter, a tattoo artist based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. 🇳🇱

I’ve been tattooing for 15 years, specialising in traditional Japanese tattooing and authentic irezumi.

For me, Japanese tattooing is more than just the artwork. Every subject has a story, a meaning, and its own place within the bigger picture.

Here I share my work, the process behind it, and the stories and traditions that inspire my designs.

If you’re into Japanese tattooing, you’re in the right place. Thanks for following along! 🐉

Everyone has their own demons.

I wanted to draw Miyamoto Musashi facing his.

Not just as a samurai fighting a demon, but as a man facing the things that fight back inside his own head.

Fear. Doubt. Anger.

The kind of battles nobody else can see.

That’s what I wanted this drawing to be about.

“Today, we’re finishing this dragon koi tattoo.”

The linework and background are already done.

Now it’s time to bring the whole piece to life with color, depth and contrast.

The koi represents perseverance — swimming against the current, never giving up.

In Japanese mythology, the koi that manages to swim up the Dragon Gate transforms into a dragon.

And that’s what makes this piece so meaningful.

It’s not just a koi turning into a dragon.

It’s about becoming something stronger through the struggle.”

3 things you probably didn’t know about the Hannya mask.

Number one:
The Hannya wasn’t born a demon.

In Japanese Noh theatre, she represents a woman who became a demon because of intense jealousy, anger and heartbreak.

Number two:
The Hannya mask actually has two sides.

From the front, she looks terrifying and full of rage.

But tilt the mask down, and she appears sad and almost human.

That contrast is intentional — anger on the outside, pain underneath.

And number three:
The dragon isn’t just there to make the tattoo look powerful.

In Japanese mythology, dragons are supernatural beings strongly connected to water and the forces of nature.

So putting a Hannya and a dragon together creates a pretty dark contrast.

One represents human emotion pushed to the extreme.
The other represents a force of nature that humans can’t control.

And that’s what makes this combination so powerful in Japanese tattooing.

3 things you did not know about irezumi.
First, there were female warriors.
One of the most famous was Tomoe Gozen.
She fought alongside the man she served — and loved

Second,
When their army was defeated, he knew he was going to die.
He ordered Tomoe to leave.
She didn’t want to go.
But When she left , she made one final charge.

She rode straight at an enemy warrior, pulled him from his horse… and cutted of his head

At last : nobody knows how her story ended.
She rode away from the battlefield.
He stayed behind… and was killed.
And after that, Tomoe simply disappears from history.

Maybe that’s what makes her story so powerful.
She survived the war…
but lost the man she loved.

Finishing a Japanese dragon sleeve in 3 steps.

So, first, we put on the stencil for the claw.

Then I go back in with the lines and start connecting everything with the existing tattoo.

After that, it’s time for the shading.

And this is where the dragon really starts to come together.

The movement, the curves, the claws, the expression — all of it has to flow with the body.

Because it’s not just about drawing a dragon.

You want it to feel alive.

The lotus — a symbol of rising above.
First . A lotus grows from the mud, yet blooms clean and untouched above the water.

Second. That’s why it has become a symbol of strength, transformation and overcoming hardship.

At last. In a tattoo, the lotus can represent the journey from darkness to growth — becoming something stronger through what you’ve been through.
A reminder that beauty can grow from the mud.

Sun Wukong’s or son Goku headband might just look like a simple detail… but it carries a much deeper meaning.

The golden band was placed around his head by the goddess Guanyin, to control his wild and uncontrollable nature.

Whenever Wukong disobeys, the band tightens around his head, causing him unbearable pain.
But the headband ultimately represents something we can all relate to: discipline and self-control.

We all have moments when we get angry, act impulsively, or lose control of ourselves.
The headband reminds you to master your own strength, rather than letting it control you.
True strength isn’t about how strong you are, but about how well you can control yourself.
