CLASSIC BOAT VISITS VMG YACHTBUILDERS

During its visit to VMG Yachtbuilders, Classic Boat looked at a range of projects across the yard, from the construction and outfitting of custom sportfishers and the aluminium Puffin 42 Expedition to extensive refits and restorations.

A NEW RESTORATION PROJECT: KYARA II

A new project is taking shape at VMG Yachtbuilders. Kyara II is a traditional riveted launch from 1923, now undergoing an extensive restoration at our yard in Enkhuizen.

For her owners, replacing her was never really the question. Kyara II has been part of their lives for many years and carries with her countless memories. The aim is therefore not to turn her into a different boat, but to give her everything she needs for many more years on the water.

The project was brought to VMG Yachtbuilders by Olivier van Meer Design, who developed the plans for her restoration and renewal. We are now bringing those plans to life at our yard, with great respect for the boat’s original character.

The restoration includes work to the hull and exterior, extensive preservation, a renewed interior and substantial upgrades to the technical and electrical systems. Much of the existing boat has been stripped back, allowing us to carefully rebuild her from the inside out.

Her traditional appearance remains an important part of the project. The riveted construction, classic proportions and character of the original 1923 launch will remain visible, while the interior and systems are brought up to a completely different level of comfort and usability.

Work is already well underway. The technical installations and interior were removed, the cabin has been insulated and the first new furniture is now going in. The galley and bathroom are being built on board, while other interior elements are taking shape in our joinery hall.

A restoration like this is exactly the kind of project we enjoy: preserving the character of the original boat while giving her everything she needs for many more years on the water.

We look forward to sharing more of Kyara II as the restoration progresses.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE YARD | SEPTEMBER 2026

Autumn has arrived, although you would hardly know it from the weather. With the sun still making regular appearances, boating enthusiasts can enjoy a little more time on the water before many yachts head into winter storage.

At the yard, preparations for the months ahead have already begun. A wide variety of yachts will be spending the winter in our hall for refit and maintenance, and we will be sharing more about these projects in the coming months. For now, there is still plenty happening both inside and outside the yard.

Let’s start with Patriot. After leaving our hall, she was lifted so De Gier Jachtservice could fit the stabiliser fin blades. Super Duplex Hulls and Jongkind Service Medemblik then installed the loading mast at the bow and the radar mast. Patriot is now at her berth for the final technical preparations before departure.

On hull number 3 of the Sport Fish series, the teak coverboard has been completed and the teak deck is being laid in the cockpit. The first sections of the interior are now on board, while Jongkind Service Medemblik is working on the technical installations in the engine room.

Meanwhile, the first Sport Fish Express has been completed and handed over to our client. She is now on her way to the United States, where the final equipment tailored to her owner’s requirements will be installed.

And as one yacht leaves, another project is taking shape. Kyara II, a traditional riveted launch, is being restored together with Olivier van Meer Design, with respect for her original character. After removing all technical installations, she was completely stripped and the interior painted. The cabin has since been insulated and the first furniture is going in. The galley and toilet and shower compartment are now being built on board, while the bar is taking shape in our joinery hall.

ZEILEN ON TOUR | ENKHUIZEN

Last week, the team from Zeilen visited Enkhuizen as part of their “ZEILEN on Tour” around the Netherlands. Travelling with their editorial boat “Zoef”, they are meeting people, discovering interesting yachts and visiting yards along the way.

In Enkhuizen, the focus was on the new Puffin 42. The team headed out onto the IJsselmeer together with members of Team Olivier van Meer Design and VMG Yachtbuilders to experience the yacht under sail and talk about the ideas and design choices behind her.

It turned into a beautiful sunny day on the water. Although the wind gradually eased, there was still enough time to try the different sails and get a good impression of the Puffin 42.

Back ashore, the visit continued at VMG Yachtbuilders, where CEO Tim van Daal showed the team around the yard and talked about the build of the Puffin 42, the yard itself and some of the projects currently taking shape in Enkhuizen.

A nice combination of sailing, design and yachtbuilding, and a very enjoyable day with a slightly different angle on a traditional yacht test.

SPORT FISH SERIES: HULL NUMBER 2 ON HER WAY TO THE UNITED STATES 🇺🇸

Hull number 2 has left VMG Yachtbuilders. The first Express model in this Sport Fish series has been completed, delivered to our client and is now on her way to the United States.

She shares the same proven hull as the Flybridge model, but with a different deck design and a character of her own. Over the past months, we have followed her construction through many different stages. From the technical installations and high-end carpentry to the first sea trials and the final finishing.

Following successful testing and completion at our yard, she has now been handed over to our client. In the United States, the final client-specific equipment will be added before she is delivered to her owner.

For us in the Netherlands, the Sport Fish series continues. Work on hull number 3, the second Flybridge model, is progressing well, while hull number 4 is already waiting to follow!
